Jennifer Siebel Newsom Wants to End Miss Representation of Women

You've heard of the pay gap, but do you know about the leadership gap?

You've heard of the pay gap, but do you know about the leadership gap? As more women than men get college degrees and fill managerial positions, we're still not filling the halls of Congress or the seats in boardrooms.

Actress and former San Francisco First Lady Jennifer Siebel Newsom thinks the mainstream media's portrayal of women contributes to the leadership gap, and she makes this case in her documentary Miss Representation, which airs tonight on OWN at 9/8c. I spoke with Jennifer, and here's what she told me about the movie:

TrèsSugar: What inspired you to make this film?
Jennifer Siebel Newsom: I recognized the inequities in our society and that women are still so underrepresented in leadership spheres. We hold three percent of media positions of clout, we are three percent of fortune 500 CEOs, 17 percent of Congress — and we're 51 percent of the population. In the real world women are making incredible strides and the media continues to depict women as arm candy and second fiddle. Our stories aren't as revealed and rich and deep in mainstream media and there are often disparaging images of women or limited images of women. So I want to right that wrong and confront that injustice.

TS: Who are the worst offenders?
JSN: It's some of the reality TV. It's some of the news media or pundits getting away saying sexist remarks about female politicians. It's studio films. TV's getting better. It still has ways to go, but a lot of the alternative outlets on TV have created stories around strong female characters.

TS: Is there anything that gives you hope?
JSN: I think independent media is a bright spot. I'm really curious about OWN, Oprah's new network. There are more responsible media outlets and since women are 86 percent of consumers I want to encourage women to consume from those media outlets, to support the good guys.

Katie Holmes and Channing Tatum posed with their costars Ray Liotta, Jake Cherry, and James Ransone at the premiere of The Son of No One at Sundance last night. Their movie closed out the star-studded festival, and we enjoyed the gritty crime thriller. Katie is coming from LA, where she shared her well-wishes about friend Victoria Beckham's pregnancy and took care of business with Suri after visiting Tom Cruise in Vancouver. It's the second year in a row that Katie has been at the festival since she brought The Romantics in 2010.

Michael Angarano has two very different movies at Sundance this year, the very sweet Homework and Kevin Smith's headline-making Red State. Homework was quickly snatched up by Fox Searchlight, while Smith raised controversy by claiming he was going to auction off Red State after the premiere and instead announcing his own plans to distribute the film. Angarano sat down to talk with us about both projects, the Red State "circus" complete with protesters and counter-protesters, and teaming up with a talented cast including Emma Roberts and Freddy Highmore. Also, don't miss our interview with Elizabeth Reaser about Homework and Breaking Dawn.

Sundance Snapshot: The Details

I've already given you the scoop on My Idiot Brother, but the Paul Rudd comedy isn't the only film that Elizabeth Banks was promoting at Sundance.

I've already given you the scoop on My Idiot Brother, but the Paul Rudd comedy isn't the only film that Elizabeth Banks was promoting at Sundance. Her second movie, The Details, is also about a family, but that's where the similarities between the two end. Here's more about the black comedy.

  • Who's behind it? The film stars Tobey Maguire, Elizabeth Banks, Kerry Washington, Ray Liotta, and Laura Linney. It was written and directed by Jacob Aaron Estes.
  • What's it about? Jeff (Maguire) and Nealy (Banks) have been married for 10 years, and are starting to feel the negative effects of suburban married life: they rarely sex anymore, and they're constantly at each other's throats. When he's not escaping to the world of Internet porn, Jeff becomes obsessed with trapping the raccoons that have been destroying his new lawn. Between his two new hobbies, Jeff inadvertently sets off a chain of events that get him into more trouble than he ever could have imagined.

Sundance Snapshot: Channing Tatum Shows His Chops in The Son of No One

Though my time at the Sundance Film Festival is winding down, I've still got plenty of goodies to share with you all.

Though my time at the Sundance Film Festival is winding down, I've still got plenty of goodies to share with you all. The Son of No One piqued my interest for its star-studded cast, and though the cop thriller wasn't my favorite of the festival's offerings, it's not without its merits. Here's how the film measures up.

  • Who's behind it? Dito Montiel (Fighting, A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints) wrote and directed the film, which stars Channing Tatum, Katie Holmes, Al Pacino, and Tracy Morgan.
  • What's it about? The film captures two different times in the life of Jonathan White (Tatum). In 2002, he's living in Staten Island with his wife (Holmes) and young daughter. He commutes two hours a day to work as a rookie in the police force, and his personal life and career are put into peril when he starts receiving threatening messages about his haunting past. The other half of the movie shows Jonathan as a young boy living in the projects, and the audience soon learns that the older Jonathan has some serious skeletons in his closet that could destroy everything he's built.

Sundance Style: Demi Moore

Demi Moore's Sundance style is all about bundling up in the chicest way possible.

Demi Moore's Sundance style is all about bundling up in the chicest way possible. A monochromatic gray palette could be boring, but not when the actress embellishes with textures and layers. Starting with a pair of gray skinny jeans ($65), she adds a cozy open cardigan and finishes with a fabulous, fur-collar jacket. A pair of navy-hued booties add a splash of color, and oversize shades ($79) finish it off. Click the items above to shop a similar style.

It was a mini-Entourage reunion at the Creative Coalition Teachers Making a Difference lunch in Park City yesterday. Jeremy Piven and Adrian Grenier both brought their mentors out to the celebratory and charitable Sundance event held at the Bing bar. Jeremy chose to honor his mother on stage while Adrian brought along his high school drama instructor Henry Shifman. Jeremy also has a film at the festival, I Melt With You, which premieres later today. He was coming straight from filming So Undercover in New Orleans with Miley Cyrus and he had nothing but glowing words to say about his young costar. Adrian has been hitting up the Sundance hot spots in support of his short film and celebration of independent cinema. Adrian joked about his post-Entourage career during his presentation with Shifman, while fellow HBO-er Cheryl Hines moderated the philanthropic and big-hearted afternoon.
