Best of the Rest: The 2010 Oscars Luncheon

I've been going through all of the highlights and funny one-liners from this week's Oscar Nominees Luncheon, but there are a few more quotables I've yet to share.

I've been going through all of the highlights and funny one-liners from this week's Oscar Nominees Luncheon, but there are a few more quotables I've yet to share. Here's a roundup of everything else that went down in the press room, from Vera Farmiga's frequent flier advice to Woody Harrelson's Oscar night prediction.

  • Carey Mulligan's words of advice: Don't drink at award ceremonies. I did that at the Independent Film Awards in London, and I was hammered when I stood up there and I didn't think I was gonna win. I got up there and it was lucky I kept it very short and got off the stage, but since then I've been very well-behaved.
  • Jeff Bridges on earning so many nominations over the years: You'd think as long as I'd be doing this, I'd be more prepared for this. But every time I walk down that red carpet, and those lights, it seems to get more and more crazy. I'm not prepared for any of it, really. Play it as it lays!
  • Maggie Gyllenhaal's advice from her brother, Jake: The one thing he did say to me before the nominations is "There isn't actually anything at the end of the rainbow. It's a lot of fun, and enjoy it in that spirit. And if you make it mean too much more than that, you'll probably go astray."
  • Christoph Waltz on playing a villain: It's in Quentin's writing. He wrote this character. It's all on the page. It's all in the poetry. And that's really where the poetry is coming from. Quentin is not writing film scripts, he's writing dramatic poetry.

Will the Oscar Changes Make the Show Better?

No doubt about it, the Oscar telecast is going to be pretty different this year: producers Adam Shankman and Bill Mechanic are making changes to shake up the show in hopes of getting the ratings up.

No doubt about it, the Oscar telecast is going to be pretty different this year: producers Adam Shankman and Bill Mechanic are making changes to shake up the show in hopes of getting the ratings up. Aside from that whole 10 best picture nominees thing, today comes news that there won't be performances from the best original song category.

Even the actors' time onstage is being trimmed. Oscar nominees have been told to prepare two speeches: one they'll deliver onstage after winning and one for backstage with thank yous. I think that's a good idea — no one wants to be cut off by the dreaded music, and it may actually speed things up. I know the song performance elimination will help move the show along faster too, but I'm a little disappointed I won't get to watch Jeff Bridges perform "The Weary Kind."

As a viewer, do you think changes like this will improve the show and make it more entertaining?
