Five Ways to Fix the Emmys

This year's Emmys were among the lowest-rated in history, and ever since Sunday night, industry types have been trying to figure out what went wrong.

This year's Emmys were among the lowest-rated in history, and ever since Sunday night, industry types have been trying to figure out what went wrong. Was it the five reality hosts? The low-rated nature of many of the winners and nominees? The fact that fewer people are watching live TV at all these days?

Obviously, it's too late to save this year's broadcast — but I'm looking toward the future. From what I saw, both behind the scenes and on TV, I think the Emmys can still be salvaged. Here are the top five ways I'd do it:

No. 5: Give out more awards. I'm not saying to make the show longer. Believe me, I would never say that. But there are approximately a gazillion Emmy categories, and most of them don't even make the TV broadcast. Why not stage the Outstanding Choreography routines live? Or do some sort of costume gallery like the Oscars broadcast often does? And the guest stars — such a big part of so many shows — should absolutely get their awards on the big night. There are some cool things that most of us never get to see, and putting them in the show would cut down on all that filler.

No. 4: Pay tribute to TV the right way. I really enjoyed the classic TV lines montage that opened this year's Emmys, and seeing the famous sets like Seinfeld's diner recreated on the Nokia Theatre stage was pretty cool. But the Laugh-In montage was a bust, and all the reality TV blather just highlighted what annoys so many of us about TV these days. When I'm watching a celebration of the best of television, I shouldn't leave feeling embarrassed for the medium.

How-To: Hayden Panettiere's Emmys Look

Judging from Sunday's poll, Hayden Panettiere's look was an overall "love it" at the 2008 Emmy Awards.

Judging from Sunday's poll, Hayden Panettiere's look was an overall "love it" at the 2008 Emmy Awards. And that skin? Seriously, I just might need to contact Hayden's facialist, dermatologist, and/or makeup artist.

Well, guess what? We're in luck, because makeup artist Amy Oresman, who was responsible for Hayden's flawless face, shared the lowdown on how to achieve her "flat-out glamorous look." She used Neutrogena products, as Hayden is one of the brand's spokespeople. Check out the how-to below and learn exclusive tips from Oresman on how to achieve Hayden's dark, dramatic eyes:

  • Cheeks: For her trademark sun-kissed glow, Mineral Sheers Bronzer ($10.79) was dusted around the perimeter of Hayden's face, hairline, cheekbones, and lightly down the bridge of her nose. To tie the look together, the powder was applied to neck and shoulders as well. Next, a light sweep of Healthy Skin Blends Sheer Highlighting Blush in Fresh ($10.95) was added to the apples of the cheeks.

Which Heidi Klum Emmys Show Look Was Most Fab? Heidi Klum took the spotlight more than once during the Emmy Awards in an assortment of fabulous outfits. Her onstage appearances ranged from elegant evening gowns to a (goofy) masculine suit. My favorite was Klum in that sexy black Elise Overland jumpsuit. Heidi worked it in every ensemble, but which look did you prefer?

Have the Emmys Ever Made You Start Watching a Show?

At this year's Emmys, the shows that got many of the biggest awards aren't exactly winners in the ratings.

At this year's Emmys, the shows that got many of the biggest awards aren't exactly winners in the ratings. Taken all together, Mad Men, Breaking Bad, In Treatment, and Damages would probably pull in only about five to six million viewers per week!

Maybe that will change now, though, as the awards bring the shows more recognition and exposure. It makes me wonder: Have you ever started watching a series because it won an Emmy?

Stephen and Sarah Keep the Comedy Alive After the Emmys

There were lots of Emmy after parties to choose from last night, but big winners Stephen Colbert and Sarah Silverman remained true to their network at the Comedy Central Party at STK.

There were lots of Emmy after parties to choose from last night, but big winners Stephen Colbert and Sarah Silverman remained true to their network at the Comedy Central Party at STK. It may not have been the most star-studded bash, but judging from the laughs Stephen brought to the press room, there must have been plenty of fun to go around. Sarah and Kanye were red carpet absentees, but considering the boring show reviews, and reportedly really low ratings partying into the wee hours was probably a better time anyway.

Who Wore It Better? Dolce & Gabbana Corset Gown

While January Jones looked like a vintage vixen in her Dolce & Gabbana corset gown at the Emmys, Penelope Cruz turned to the dark side in the same frock at the Vicky Christina Barcelona premiere in Spain.

While January Jones looked like a vintage vixen in her Dolce & Gabbana corset gown at the Emmys, Penelope Cruz turned to the dark side in the same frock at the Vicky Christina Barcelona premiere in Spain. January kept it romantic in the lighter version with vintage-inspired accessories and a matching clutch. Penelope opted for simplicity and chose to wear her dark confection with sparkling diamond earrings. Both worked different red carpets but which belle do you prefer?
