This week's release of the 10th anniversary Sports Night DVD collection got me thinking about DVD sets and how I choose to add to my own collection. I was excited to get my hands on the new Sports Night set — but first, I had to get rid of my old one, which had all the episodes but no bonus features.
At least as far as TV on DVD is concerned, it's practically a given these days that a bigger and better DVD set will come along eventually to replace the one you already own. For example, I had to offload a bunch of my old Six Feet Under sets when I finally decided to upgrade to the complete series. The same can happen for movies: I was thrilled to see that a Criterion Collection edition of Bottle Rocket was in the works, except I already own the movie minus the best of the special features.
Do you hold out for complete series or special edition DVDs? And if you already own the basic version, do you upgrade when something new and shiny comes along?

October 2008 is chock full of big movies. Even Variety notes that "the biz" is bracing itself for some "bottlenecking" at the box office this month. Studios are none too pleased about all the releases because with the glut of options, as Disney president of distribution Chuck Viane wonders, "How do you even get noticed?"
So which one has caught your eye the most? The cute romance with that sweet-faced Michael Cera, Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist? Or maybe Leo will lure you into Ridley Scott's Body of Lies? What about Mark Wahlberg in Max Payne, or Clint Eastwood's weighty drama, Changeling?
I love the Fall and October is the best, what with the changing leaves and Halloween and all. It's also a great time of year for entertainment, so I didn't have any trouble digging up some must-have items for my list. I've included an artist who should definitely be on in the background when the weather gets cold, a funny book to read by the fire (or heater), a scary movie to watch in the safety of your own home (with candy), and very cool TV-to-DVD choices. Just when I was afraid Fringe was getting too formulaic — already — the show delivered an episode that broke the mold. The mystery isn't tidily wrapped up at the end, the good vs. evil of Massive Dynamic isn't even a subplot, and Peter Bishop's actually given a reason to stick around! I wonder if the powers that be just wanted to give us a few episodes to get used to everything, because this is what I was expecting when I heard about Fringe. Did anyone else enjoy it?
