Cannes Review: James Franco Makes an Ambitious but Faltering Debut With As I Lay Dying

James Franco's As I Lay Dying earned a standing ovation following its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, but while it shows promise for Franco's burgeoning directorial career, its stumbles highlight his newness to helming films.

James Franco's As I Lay Dying earned a standing ovation following its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, but while it shows promise for Franco's burgeoning directorial career, its stumbles highlight his newness to helming films.

William Faulkner's classic novel As I Lay Dying is a famously dense story about the destitute Bundren clan and their calamitous journey to lay their matriarch, Addie, to rest in Jefferson, MS. The trip unleashes a dismal chain of events that leaves them all somehow changed or scarred — sometimes physically.

It seems fitting that Franco, an actor-slash-author himself, would combine his love for film and literature in his feature-length directorial debut. And he does an impressive job unraveling the complex narrative, which in the book is told by 15 different characters and jumps vaguely backward and forward in time. Sure, there's no doubt that it's ambitious for a first-time filmmaker to take on one of the most acclaimed novels in American history, but at least Franco's devotion to, and admiration of, the source material is clear. He does well capturing its Southern Gothic sensibility, shooting in the mostly drab colors of the Great Depression and drawing appropriately beaten-down performances from his actors.

6 of the Most Buzzed-About (and Booed) Movies of the Cannes Film Festival

The Cannes Film Festival is the most prominent cinematic celebration in the world, making it a place where a film can either skyrocket to success — or crash and burn.

This year, a handful of movies came to dominate the conversation among industry insiders in the South of France. Sofia Coppola's study of youth and excess in LA, The Bling Ring, and the latest Coen brothers offering, Inside Llewyn Davis, were two of the most talked-about projects in contention at the fest, and some unexpected films also made a splash. Click through for our breakdown of the six movies that got the most lip service — both good and bad! — during our time at this year's festival!

Video: Ahna O'Reilly on Ex James Franco's "Kindest Gesture" and Cannes Nerves!

Ahna O'Reilly has not one, but two projects at the Cannes Film Festival this year, and we sat down with the actress to talk about this extraordinary experience, the reception to her two movies, and what it was like to work with her ex-boyfriend James Franco as a director.

Ahna O'Reilly has not one, but two projects at the Cannes Film Festival this year, and we sat down with the actress to talk about this extraordinary experience, the reception to her two movies, and what it was like to work with her ex-boyfriend James Franco as a director. First up for Ahna was Fruitvale Station, which was coming off huge Sundance success before subsequently being picked up by The Weinstein Company. Ahna spoked about reuniting with good friend Octavia Spencer for their surreal Cannes Palais moment. Ahna also revealed how much she doubted that James Franco actually wanted her to star in his adaptation of As I Lay Dying and discussed who, between the two of them, was more nervous for their big premiere. Check our chat, and keep your eye out for lots more from Ahna O'Reilly.

James Franco Hosts a Cannes Bash For Former Girlfriend and Current Costar Ahna O'Reilly

James Franco toasted Ahna O'Reilly at a dinner party held on a yacht last night in Cannes.

James Franco toasted Ahna O'Reilly at a dinner party held on a yacht last night in Cannes. The event, thrown by James and The Art of Elysium, honored the actress's impressive debut at the film festival. Ahna is starring in not one but two movies being presented at the cinematic celebration. She acts alongside James in his latest passion project, As I Lay Dying, and is also in town for the premiere of Fruitvale Station, which was one of the most talked-about films at Sundance earlier this year. That project saw Ahna reunite with her The Help costar, Octavia Spencer, who stopped by the soiree last night. Guests mingled on the deck — where James and Ahna were the center of attention — over Champagne and dinner as the sun set on the South of France.

James and Ahna dated for several years before parting ways in 2011, then recently reunited professionally for their latest film. Last night, they shared a hug as James arrived before catching up with the creative crowd in attendance. It was a relaxed evening for the pair, who are preparing to unveil As I Lay Dying tonight at its Cannes premiere. The movie is an adaptation of William Faulkner's most acclaimed novel and marks James's feature-length directorial debut. It's one of 17 movies from around the world in competition at the festival, which continues throughout the week.

Inside Llewyn Davis

Justin Timberlake and Carey Mulligan Talk About the “Warm and Fuzzy” Inside Llewyn Davis

Carey Mulligan, Justin Timberlake, Garrett Hedlund, and Oscar Isaac joined forces today at the Cannes Film Festival to promote their new Coen brothers film, Inside Llewyn Davis.

Carey Mulligan, Justin Timberlake, Garrett Hedlund, and Oscar Isaac joined forces today at the Cannes Film Festival to promote their new Coen brothers film, Inside Llewyn Davis. The movie, which follows Oscar's character as a fictionalized, struggling folk singer in the 1960s, was one of the most anticipated of the day.

After a photocall by the beach, the cast and directors gave a press conference, where they talked about the familial bond they shared on the set and the vital role that music plays in the telling of the story. Here are some highlights:

Justin on his connection to the movie's music: "As far as singing in the movie, obviously on the surface, it’s a different style from the music I make in real life. But listen, man, I grew up in Tennessee. Home of the blues, birthplace of rock and roll. . . . My grandfather [had] an old Gibson guitar — he taught me how to fingerpick. So it felt warm and fuzzy to me to be in this movie."

Carey on singing on screen: “I’m very nervous about singing in front of people. We had a week before we started shooting where we worked — what did we do? We all met up, and T-Bone produced the music and decided . . . what everyone’s voice was going to sound like.”

Oscar on the importance of music in creating character: "For everybody, the songs were what really showed you their inner life and their taste, their point of view. I saw it almost as much as a rehearsal for the personhood as the music.”

Justin on making it as a musician: “There is sort of the Malcolm Gladwell 10,000 hours theory about how you can’t consider yourself an expert at anything until you’ve kind of had 10,000 hours at it. I agree with practice. There's many people that spend that much time and somehow never get heard. You meet so many talented people along the way who for some reason or another don’t get heard."

Rooney marked the new partnership alongside Francisco Costa, the creative director of Calvin Klein Collection, at the party, which was also hosted by Belvedere and IWC. Inside the dimly lit and intimate soiree, she chatted with producer Harvey Weinstein, while Carey mingled by the DJ booth before making an early departure. Nicole also made time in her Cannes schedule to attend. All three actresses are busy working this week. Carey has been in NYC lately prepping for the release of The Great Gatsby. At the premiere of the movie last week, she told us the elaborate costumes on set made her nervous and even admitted to accidentally breaking some pieces of jewelry during shooting.
