Friday Tunes: A Lollapalooza-Inspired Playlist

Updated 08/08/09 10:37 AM · Posted by BellaSugar · 4 comments

Note from Buzz: Please enjoy another music post from my lovely music-loving friend Bella.

Wheeeeee! Bella here, lamenting the fact that she's thousands of miles away from Chicago. Between the recent Pitchfork festival and this weekend's Lollapalooza events, the city of big shoulders is the city of big fun. Beginning today, dozens of Lolla bands and artists will descend on Grant Park as music-world heavyweights (Depeche Mode, The Killers) and buzzed-about names (Fleet Foxes, Dan Deacon) rock the waterfront. I checked out Radiohead a few years ago in the same outdoor space, and lemme tell ya, there's nothing like soaking up a bassline while the city skyline lights up behind you.

There are still tickets available, so if you're up for some noise in Illinois, have at it. For the rest of us, I've created a little playlist in honor of the fest. Check it out (and find out how you can score some mp3s for free) right ovah here

Music Video: Coupleskate, "Foreign Exchange"

Updated 07/28/09 9:11 PM · Posted by BellaSugar · 3 comments

Hey hey, Bella here. It will come as no surprise to you that I am a big fan of all-girl bands. Don’t get me wrong, I like dudes who rock and all, but something about seeing women go to town on an instrument is inspiring. Even if the music is just so-so, I watch a guitarist play and think, “Yeah, I could do that, too.”

Fortunately, Coupleskate, an all-lady band from Chicago, is so far from so-so. The laid-back, fuzzed out melody of "Foreign Exchange" is so choice for summertime nights, and the homegrown feel of the video is charming. You can check this one out when you read more

Soundtrack Review: (500) Days of Summer

Updated 07/20/09 9:27 AM · Posted by BellaSugar · 6 comments

Note from Buzz: My buddy Bella is going to contribute some of her thoughtful musings about music here from time to time. Her inaugural post is an album review of the (500) Days of Summer soundtrack. Take it away, Bella!

A movie soundtrack has more or less the same goal as a great mix tape: it needs to put a scene in the listener's mind, produce an emotional response, and introduce an amazing new song or two. Considering how integral music is to the plot of (500) Days of Summer, a lot is riding on the film's soundtrack. The film isn't shy about revealing its hip-kid leanings — after all, our lovebirds initially bond over their love of the Smiths, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt sports Clash and Joy Division tees — but the soundtrack is an ambrosia salad of sweet but all-over-the-place tunes. The Shield Roars Into Its Final Season

Updated 09/02/08 12:59 PM · Posted by BellaSugar · 4 comments

Hey everyone. BellaSugar here. Buzz has let me guest-blog because, well, I won't shut up about The Shield. I know what you're thinking: "Another cop drama? Yawn." Yeah, that's what I thought, too, but trust me: This is easily the best show on TV. The first episode of the seventh and final season airs tonight at 10 p.m. on FX, and if you aren't watching, you're missing out. The Emmy-winning acting is marvelous, the writing is tight (seriously, no plot line is left unfinished) and you'll be amazed by how much drama is packed into each episode.

A little background: Inspired by the real-life story of a corrupt anti-gang unit in the LAPD, the show focuses on the Strike Team, a group of dirty cops. When I say dirty, I mean filthy: They've killed fellow officers, knocked over the Armenian mob, and aren't above a little police brutality on the side. When we catch up with Detective Vic Mackey, the team leader, he's fighting to keep his badge — and plotting against his partner, Shane Vendrell, who murdered another member of the Strike Team. Oh, and did I mention that his teenage daughter is getting involved with some illegal dealings of her own, that he's the baby daddy of another cop's child, and that he's stolen a list of files used in an elaborate blackmail scheme? Juicy stuff.

I've checked out the first eight episodes of season seven in advance, and for you fellow fangirls (and fanboys) who are already hooked, I've got a few thoughts if you read more

Playlist: Father's Day

Updated 06/15/07 4:26 PM · Posted by BellaSugar · 1 comment

Surely you haven't forgotten that Father's Day is this Sunday. Whether you're throwing your dad a party or you just want to let him know that you're thinking about him, I've got a Playlist prepared for the occasion.

I briefly considered making a mix of "dad rock," like Bob Seger and John Mellencamp. But I just couldn't pass up an opportunity to get all weepy-eyed while listening to Harry Chapin's "Cat's In the Cradle." It gets me every time! I've got some other pretty sappy stuff on here, like Cat Stevens' "Father and Son," and Ben Harper covering John Lennon's "Beautiful Boy." But just in case you get too emotional, I've thrown in some slightly siller selections too.

What would you put on your Father's Day Playlist? Tell me below. Then, check out my iMix. Clicking the link takes you to a URL that will ask you to launch iTunes, so just click "launch application" in the pop-up window. That's right: I'm now publishing the BuzzSugar Playlists on iTunes, which means you can even give Dad the iMix as an e-gift if you need a last-minute present
