If you're a fan of Parenthood, Revolution, Chicago Fire, Grimm, and/or Law & Order: SVU, then today's your lucky day — NBC has just renewed all of those shows for new seasons! Returning series Grimm and SVU were pretty much a lock, but Parenthood has always been a bubble show, so I'm particularly excited to see the Braverman crew return for a fifth season. Remember the days of Grey's Anatomy past, when Meredith was always at the center of the big drama on the show? Well, now she's taking a backseat, and this week Bailey steps into the spotlight as the hospital comes under fire for the recent staph infection outbreak in patients. Not that I'm complaining — I love seeing Meredith's biggest problems revolve around her pregnancy, and Chandra Wilson truly shines this week as Bailey grapples with everything that happens (and has happened).
While Bailey is questioning herself and her peers, Alex inadvertently pushes Jo away just as he's coming to terms with his feelings for her. Cristina also feels like there's distance in her relationship with Owen, especially as he grows closer with Ethan and continues to emerge as a father figure. Prince Avalanche is one of the indie gems that has been making the festival circuit (Sundance, SXSW, Tribeca), and now we've got a trailer for the film. Paul Rudd goes against type (and sports a mustache!) to play Alvin, an uptight road worker who is spending some time in the middle of nowhere with his girlfriend's little brother Lance (Emile Hirsch). Painting lines on the road doesn't prove to be as rewarding for Lance, though, whom Alvin deems to be mentally slow.
The trailer for Prince Avalanche seams to blend Alvin's dry humor perfectly with Lance's goofiness. It's especially refreshing to see Hirsch being the oddball and Rudd the straight man, since it feels like a departure for both actors. The Office series finale is just a few weeks away now, which means the show's actors are getting ready to move on. Jenna Fischer stopped by Late Show With David Letterman this week and talked about how the cast and crew prepped to say goodbye to the beloved employees of Dunder Mifflin. She also mentioned that the actors were able to give input on what will become of their characters, and their hopes were worked into the final episode. Aww.
Iron Man's not the only Avenger who's coming back to theaters this year — Thor (Chris Hemsworth) returns to the big screen in November, and he's got quite a lot on his plate. His first priority is coming back to Earth for Jane (Natalie Portman), his girlfriend, whom he plucks out of London right in the middle of a science experiment. Odin isn't exactly safe for a human, though, because there's a new bad guy in town named Malekith who has an entire army of Dark Elves. So whom does Thor turn to? Why, his deranged brother, Loki (Tom Hiddleston), who is now locked up (and hasn't seemed to have washed his hair).
I loved the lighter, sillier tone of the original Thor movie (compared to, say, Captain America), but the trailer isn't exactly packed with jokes — though I guess that's to be expected when the word "dark" is right there in the title. If you've been anxiously awaiting the final season of Breaking Bad, then I've got some good news and some bad news. The good news is that it finally has a confirmed return date! The bad news is that the show's final eight episodes won't start airing until Aug. 11. But wait — there's more good news! AMC has picked up a new series called Talking Bad that will serve as a postgame show of sorts after each episode (if you've seen Talking Dead, then you know what to expect). I'm excited for any extra bit of Breaking Bad fanaticism as we get ready to say goodbye to Walt and Jesse, even if we do have to wait a few more months to get it.
We're counting down to Catching Fire's November release date, even more so now that we've seen the first trailer for the Hunger Games sequel. Filming for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 has been under way in New York, and this week we caught a glimpse of a very exciting new character: Electro! Jamie Foxx plays the villain in the sequel, who becomes blue (literally) after he's struck by lightning. While most of the world was underwhelmed by The Lizard in the first Spidey movie, it's looking like the sequel could have a much more terrifying bad guy — not to mention a much cooler-looking one. When The Hangover Part II was filming, the cast and crew was super hush-hush about what the Wolfpack would be up to in the sequel.
