What Had You Glued to Your TV — Olympics or World Cup?

The World Cup will come to an exciting end this weekend with Sunday's championship between the Netherlands and Spain. I'm surprised with how much soccer I've been watching, even after the US team was eliminated from competition — and I only partially blame it on the lack of regularly scheduled programming.

It got me thinking about how I couldn't stop watching the Winter Olympics earlier this year, getting all caught up in the events and rooting for USA all the way. The events only happen every four years after all, and it's hard to ignore when everyone is watching. So which event had you more glued to your TV?

Flicidades Uruguay.... Forlan was given the golden ball for the best player in the WC... as for spain.. Iker Casillas that is all i got to say... i cant wait for the next WC in brazil is going to be awesome...

The World Cup!! It was an incredible spectacle - the best WC I've ever seen. Congrats to the Spanish.

I know nobody cheated, that's the referee who says so. Well, there is no doubt that THOSE hands ( plural) made Uruguay won, but COME ON, the best finale, probably, the best score in a word cup's finale was a hand ball by Diego Maradona, and this is etched on everybody memory. So Clara don't worry,and congrats for your 4th and, of course, for the best football player, Forlan, I adore him, he plays in our league and I know he is the best. People unfair things happen and that doesn't mean that is unfair if the referee doesn't see it, that's football, sometimes it benefits some people, sometimes it benefits the others. And if you already don't know SPAIN IS THE WINERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!Thanks to Clara, especially to pinky pink (I'm really gland you've got Spanish ancestors, and I hope you enjoyed this victory) and to pushthruthunder. Yeah, I guess I'm being defensive but we're just sick of being told we cheated when we didn't. Football is a sport, you play, you know the rules, you know the consequences. When you see a goal that's going to leave you out of the Wold Cup, you do EVERYTHING you can to stop it. Ans Pinky said, it's what any player would have done. Suarez was penalized for what he did, and the game moved on. I'm sorry if you thought I was being patronizing, but I can assure you that Ghana being the last African team had a lot to do with everything. The referee was against us the entire game (like the other 2 were in the games against Korea and Netherlands..) and I'm sure that had a lot to do with it. We're only 3 million people in Uruguay, half the world didn't know who the hell we are, we don't sell tickets. I don't think they wanted us to go as far as we did. Anyways, I really don't want to discuss anymore. We're all happy here, we're SO proud of our players and we'll be welcoming tomorrow as they deserve! Diego Forlan was named best player of the Cup so that's one more reason to be happy. And congratulations to Spain!

pss, my ancestors were from spain and I have a spanish last name so it's my duty :) lolI agree with clara, any pro player would have done the same thing if they were in suarez' situation. It's the way things go. I was rooting for uruguay too but that didn't have a great outcome :(

LOL. Really? My comment is my opinion and you really shouldn't feel the need to defend yourself. I hope you can relax now you've had your say. Heres mine.He put his hand up to block an imminent goal AT THE GOAL LINE. If , according to you, "players have to do anything they can to prevent from losing" then they might as well ALL use their hands when they get desperate. There is alot of room for questionable behaviour in this sport, but the very simple rule any child can understand. Don't use your hands! The fact that FIFA didn't take issue with it is not the point. Almost everyone else did. Their system is far from perfect. Even goals which physically make it past the goal line are sometimes not counted due to no goal line technology. So not exactly a ringing endorsement for the fairness of the system. Still, it is what is is. Ghana missed the penalty, fact. However was Ghanas goal in the last minutes literally a handball away from a goal. Yes. Fact. I understand Suarez was desperate which is why he did that. Unfortunately, the team got through and advanced no further. He embarrassed himself with nothing to show for it.You saying you 'know they were the last African team in the Cup' is also pretty patronizing. What does that have to do with anything? What happened was cheating as I define it and it would be the same whatever team he did it to. Agree to disagree ok. I'm not going to be reading or commenting on any follow ups

Chelsea: I should know better than getting into discussions like this, but seriously? It's football! Players have to do anything they can to prevent from losing, and that's what Suarez did. It was an instant reflex! He did what he did, knowing the consequences, he was kicked out and Ghana had a penalty. That's how football is like. It's the same when a foul is committed near a goal, the player is kicked out and there's a penalty. I've never seen anyone complain about that. Plus, if Ghana had scored that penalty, it would have been a completely different story. I'm sorry they didn't, but we performed much better in the penalty kicks, and we deserved to win. I know they were the last African team in the Cup, but that doesn't mean we deserved to win any less (which, apparently wasn't what the referees and the whole FIFA thought..)

World Cup! I admit I am one of those fans who really gets into soccer/football when major events come along, Championships, World Cup etc., but isn't that the same for the Olympics? I mean I never watch any of those sports until the Olympics (ex. snowboarding, figure skating)... so it can go both ways.

World cup for sure. I'm a fan of football and I always enjoy the drama of the world cup. I was rooting for Ghana throughout and was pretty heartbroken (along with everyone else I know) when that pathetic Uruguayan handball stopped them from advancing any further. Players like that just bring the game into disrepute. Holland to win! But Spain is also v deserving.

I was really surprised at how I started to get into the World Cup. It's surprisingly exciting, as you already said. I am now a complete Spain fan [since round of 16]!

Definitely the World Cup! It's was a fantastic year for Uruguay so to me it was more exciting than ever! Now we're up for 3rd place in just a few hours, but we were SO close to making it to the final!Good luck to Spain tomorrow! I'm already nervous for today!

The Olympics gets my full attention because it's cold here and Winter sports "speak" to me. But, then it warms up and I'm right there watching the soccer WC. I chose the Olympics because it's 4 years of waiting to see amazing athletes in a variety of sports. But, it's a hard choice because I won't miss the soccer WC either. It's all so good!!!
