How Ben Affleck Helped Create Weekend Update's Stefon

You might know John Mulaney from his work as a stand-up, but most likely, you know him as the Saturday Night Live writer who created Bill Hader's Stefon character. While promoting his own new show on Fox, Mulaney, during Fox's Summer TCA panels, the comedian divulged the tale of how one of SNL's most beloved characters came into existence. Here's the story!

"Stefon came about in a sketch that we did at about 4 in the morning one night when Ben Affleck was hosting. It was a sketch where Stefon, the character that we eventually put in Weekend Update, was trying to pitch a movie with his brother, and they're very different. Ben Affleck is playing this straight-laced screenwriter, and Stefon is his brother, interrupting the pitch. It was similar to the character you saw, but in a totally different setting. Once we brought Stefon on to be a commentator on Weekend Update, he took on this whole new energy."

You can watch a shady version of the sketch here, or you can just revel in this expression.
