Earlier this week I posted a preview for Renee Zellweger's latest project, Miss Potter, and it got me thinking about Zellweger and her career. She seems to be a very hit-or-miss actress, veering between funny and likeable and silly or one-dimensional. While I'll have to see Miss Potter to decide whether she's right for that part, I know for sure that there are some movies in which Zellweger truly shines. Check out my picks for some of her best work, and let me know your thoughts.
Empire Records
Zellweger is young and endearing in this teenage angst-y dramedy about an independent record store in danger of being absorbed by a large chain. The motley crew of misfits who work at the store must think of ways to raise enough money for Empire Records to remain independent. Zellweger gives a spot-on performance as the promiscuous Gina, contrasting hilariously with the sweet, lovestruck Corey (played by a nubile Liv Tyler). Best part: Gina and Corey's fabulously screechy teen girl fight.

Chicago
In this film version of the hit Broadway musical, Zellweger plays Roxie Hart, a fame-hungry woman who ends up in jail for killing her boyfriend when he won't make her a star. Catherine Zeta-Jones co-stars as Velma Kelly, imprisoned for having murdered her husband and sister after finding them in bed together. Velma's slick lawyer Billy Flynn (played smugly by Richard Gere) makes the duo into a tabloid sensation, and they cattily compete for the public spotlight. To me, Renee Zellweger epitomizes Roxie Hart: proud, greedy, girlish, beautiful and insecure, and the film is completely entertaining from beginning to end.
Cold Mountain
I went to see Cold Mountain for two reasons: Jude Law's hotness and Anthony Minghella's directing. This cinematic take on The Odyssey follows a soldier (Law) as he makes the long journey home back to his beloved (Kidman), who is struggling to keep the family farm going with the help of a spunky young wanderer played by Zellweger. At first, I was afraid that Zellweger might distract from an otherwise stunning film, but her polished performance and flawless Southern accent were two of the best things about the movie.

Debenhams
Looove Empire, although I wasn't beig on Renee in it. Mark was definitely my favourite. I really liked Chicago too, one of my favourite musicals.
1I love the first Bridget Jones movie and "Me, Myself and Irene" has always been a guilty pleasure movie of mine...
2Cold Mountain was amazing, as was Bridget Jones' Diary. But my all-time favorite movie of hers is One True Thing, which also stars Meryl Streep. It's based on an Anna Quindlen book and from some experiences in my own life, it's a totally relatable story. Tearjerker to the max, but a great movie.
3I actually like all of her movies but didn't remember her being in "Empire Records." Now I kinda want to see it again. But she was ideal as Bridget!
4I loved Empire Records, especially as it ends with The The's "This is the day" - great movie.
5Nurse Betty, Me Myself & Irene, Bridget Jones' Diary, Chicago, Down With Love, Bridget Jones: Edge of Reason are all great. I like her best in comedies.
6I agree, Kelsen! One True Thing is the first movie I pop in when I need a good cry.
7The Whole Wide World is a small movie from '96 she did with Vincent D'Onofrio. It's amazing!
8Down with Love is such a great parody of the Rock/Doris movies that my sisters and I grew up watching with my mom. I love this movie because of Renee but also because Ewan is super dreamy in this one!
9Family guy said it best when she should be no more then the cute friend in a movie.
10How could Jerry Maguire be left off this list?
"You had me at hello!"
11Good point, Mooneab! Jerry Maguire rocked w/ Renee, too!
12damn the man, save the empire.
13bridget jones's diary! my favorite book and one of my favorite movies - she portrayed the character wonderfully.
14I agree about liking her best in comedies. I love Bridget Jones Diary!
15I do enjoy her as well in Comedies. Jerry Maguire and Bridget Jone's Diary.
16Ugh, Jerry Maguire was such an annoying movie. I can't stand Tom Cruise and Renee Zellweger was too squinty or something.
17Down With Love is awesome, though! So funny and she has some cool costumes in that film, too.
She's also really good in White Oleander; she just seems really sweet.
Ugh, agreed, I did not like Jerry Maguire, except for Bonnie Hunt. I think I'm the only one that cringed with embarrassment through the Show Me the Money scene.
I like alot of Rene's movies tho. Loved Cold Mountain and Me, Myself and Irene.

Wow! That WAS Renee in Empire Records! SHE was the one that sang "Sugar High"????? Wow, blew my mind!
I loved that movie so much! That, and Clueless, although I realize this was supposed to be about Renee, not 90's movies. I'm not a big fan of hers for other movies.
19i lovvvvvvvvvvveeeeeeeeee her she's soooooooooo awesome!
20She's amazing ...especially loved her in Cold Mountain ..
