Were You Satisfied with the Ending of "The Sopranos"?

After eight years, six seasons — and more whackings than I can count — "The Sopranos" finished its run last night with a crazy ending that certainly has you talking. The final few minutes (which you can watch here) had me feeling physically tense, and after some thought, I think the controversial final moment was the perfect way to end it. That being said, I'm only a casual fan of the series and I totally understand die-hards feeling short changed. So I have to ask: Were you happy with how it all wrapped up?

Even if Nikki wasn't in the restaurant in the end, there were many suspicious people in the joint, and I think its a possibility Tony is dead. I think they left it open on purpose, to cause all this controversary on the topic. No sense going out, if no one is talking about it.

the e-mail forward is a hoax- all of the people in the diner were strangers. the man at the counter was not 'nikki leotardo' (that is a woman), he was listed in the credits as 'man in members only jacket'. he had never been on the show before.

Wow, interesting take kodwhite, thanks. I thought they just left it open on purpose, for a possible movie, or whatever. Personally, I like Steven Colbert's ending: Tony looks up, the screen goes all fuzzy white, and back into focus, to show Tony in his bed. He wakes, and says he just had the worst dream, he dreamt that he was a mob boss in Jersey. His wife rolls over, and its Carrie Bradshaw. The entire 8 years was a SATC spin off, the whole time! :rotfl:

My hubby said he, too, thinks Tony died b/c of that conversation in the boat w/ Bobby... everything did go to black, so I will choose to believe that is probably what happened. :P

My bf said the same thing how he thinks the end was supposed to be that Tony had died because of his conversation with Bobby about when you die. It was an interesting ending however it was supposed to be.

Linking the final scene to the prior conversation with Bobby makes for an interesting interpretation of the ending. I like this theory, kodwhite. Thanks for sharing your friend's thoughts.

I like your (and your friend's!) theory kodwhite. But, I watched the end of it again tonight on HBO, and there were chimes when Meadow walked in. I forgot all about that conversation with Bobby though. I think that's a dead give away that he probably got clipped.

Total cop-out. He was never going to satisfy everyone, but this was so blatantly a slap in the face. Just: fade to black. What the hell?

Just got this explanation as an email forward, it makes so much sense and now I am thrilled with the ending. He was killed.... in fact, the ending was genius if you've paid attention to the show or are just a fan of well developed well thought out plots that all tie together and have the memory of a champ to remember it all the ending was simple, he got killed, but let me tell yall why and explain in detail... There was 3 people in the room total who had a reason to kill tony..... the two black guys, they were paid before to kill tony but he was only shot in the ear, this was in one of the earlier seasons, also in the earlier seasons, the trucker who was sitting at the bar stool, who the camera kept focusing in on, is Nikki leotardo, Phil Leotardos nephew, he was in one of the early season episodes where Phil and Tony have a sit down.... heres where the genius comes in.... When tonys walking in the diner,you see the camera focus on him, then it switches to his perspective, and you see him looking @ the booth he is gonna sit at... then the camera switches back to tonys face, then it once again switches to his perspective, and it shows him looking @ the door and looking @ the people come in..... Everytime the door opens the Chimes sound....... Carmela walks in, Chimes, AJ walks in Chimes, this when Meadows parallel parking, still trying to get inside the restaurant.... at this point the camera switches back to the trucker who goes in the bathroom...... Then it goes to a scene where meadow finally parks and starts running in the diner.... the doors about to open, Tony looks up.... and No Chimes...................... No Music............ Everything just goes black............... In one of the early episodes of the sopranos, tonys talking with bobby about what it must feel like to die.. Bobby says "at the end, you probably dont hear anything, everything just goes black" part of that was revisited in the second to last episode during the last seconds of it, when tonys about to go to sleep and he flashes back to the memory of him and bobby on the boat... "You probably dont hear anything everything just goes black" so in the end, the Journey song was playing, the chimes on the door sounded but when meadow came in, the guy in the trucker hat came out and killed tony... its the reason you dont hear, or see sh*t when he died.... it was from his perspective.... and everything went black, then the credits rolled.

I think the ending was brilliant. ccsugar - I agree with you in that I think it was meant to show that Tony & his family will survive. I also think that it was meant to show that Tony will always be looking over his shoulder & his family will always be in some sort of danger. I'll miss the show. :-(

it was definitely a clever way of ending the show. it kept everyone in suspense the whole time.. i was one of those people that thought that the cable died at the last minute... lol.... after i realized it wasn't a cable problem, i laughed and thought WOW that was a good ending..

I was satisfied with the ending. But I totally thought my cable went out for a minute there and I was pissed!!! All in all, I don't think I would have been happy had they killed any of those four off.

I was so angry about the ending I couldn't even stay to watch "John From Cincinnati." Bad HBO, bad...If it weren't for Big Love, I'd cancel my subscription.

LisaK, I heard this morning on the radio that David Grey was going to sell a DVD with different endings... If I heard it correctly (I probably didn't, I was still half asleep at the time!), there were 4 different endings to choose from. I'm not sure yet how I feel about the ending. I think the message that was meant to be sent (at least IMHO), is that Tony and his families will survive and keep thriving. Notice how the last words of the show were "don't stop", from the Journey song?

I think the ending was perfect, even though I'm sure it left a lot of people on the edge of their seat. Everyone thought it would either go one of two ways, but david chase just teased everyone through the whole episode and it's just business as usual. I love it. I will miss the Soprano's, but it had a Good run!
