Pack your umbrella and your popcorn: 27-year-old cable network stalwart The Weather Channel is going to start showing movies on Friday nights.
The movies will be weather-themed or feature weather prominently, and the first is the George Clooney drama The Perfect Storm; others lined up include March of the Penguins, Deep Blue Sea and Misery. Of course, TWC won't leave you out in the cold — weather updates will show up on-screen while the movies are playing, so you'll still know when to actually expect the perfect storm (ba dum ching!).
While it's kind of a cute idea, I don't really know what the point is — to get the coveted Friday night viewers looking for a weather-inspired movie on TV? I guess it's not a terrible thing to stumble upon Clooney's face when all you were expecting was a weatherman telling you how cloudy it is in your neck of the woods. What do you make of this news?

how does Misery fit along with the theme of the other movies??
1Are they going to break in with Local on the Eights?
2I think Misery would fit in because he crashes in a snow storm. It's snowy therefore weather related??
3huh - that's kind of interesting/odd. i don't know how i feel about that one - i think that maybe it just feels a little displaced but i guess they need to do what they can for ratings in order to get advertisers to pay right?
4Um, I don't like them breaking my Local on the 8's...grrr. Although Twister would fit right in...
5I don't know...I need my local on the 8s!
6I already watch Weather Channel shows during my Sunday morning hangovers. I am fascinated with Storm Stories, although it might have something to do with my obsession the Mega Disasters show that is on the History Channel. Storm Stories seems to be right in the middle of a hurricanes month. Bring on more of those shows, and leave the films to TNT, and Lifetime.
7i was just watching a perfect storm tonight and this made me think of it.
8The viewing audience has changed. Due to the web, mobile and other means for receiving weather related information, The Weather Channel must change just like Headline News, MTV and even TLC. The Weather Channel is probably becoming a two dimension network. Heavy weather in the mornings and afternoons, series and movies in the evenings. Ratings is the driver. People tune in for very little periods of time to see their forecast and then move on. Even FoxNews and MSNBC changed the news arena, hence the reason CNN is in last place now among cable news audiences. They haven’t kept up with what people want. As far as AccuWeather, they have been around longer than The Weather Channel and would NEVER pose a threat to them, and The Weather Channel knows it. I have read that before long you will be able to receive your local forecast any time you like on The Weather Channel through multiple agreements they have with cable operators and satellite companies. I can do that now with pushing the menu button on my Directv remote. BTW, I will watch The Perfect Storm, great movie.
9I think in terms of them attracting more viewers this is a good programming decision. I suppose they'll play movies that promote the fictitious idea of global warming, which I view as a bad thing, but overall I think this is a good move on their part.
