Jerry O'Connell Is Going From "the Fat Kid in Stand by Me" to "Speedo Man"

Jerry O'Connell, Tony Shalhoub, Kal Penn, and Chris Smith proved to be one of the funniest panels at the Summer TCA while promoting their upcoming CBS comedy, We Are Men. The stars appeared with the series producers to discuss O'Connell's many Speedo moments on the show, as well as why they think a show centered on a group of divorced and relationship-challenged men will appeal to female viewers.

  • O'Connell openly acknowledged that many people think of him as "the fat kid from Stand by Me," though he did note he'd prefer to be referred to as "husky." When asked about his Speedo moments (of which there are a few in the show's pilot alone), O'Connell said: "I'm continually trying to make sure blood is flowing to every part of my body at all times . . . It's something I have to embrace. I've joined a gym, I've started drinking light beer." O'Connell's wife, former swimwear model Rebecca Romijn, advised that he go to a tanning salon, an endeavor that he inevitably botched, saying, "I should have talked to the cast of Jersey Shore before."
  • Penn famously left behind acting (including his steady gig on House) for a political career, and he talked a little bit about his experience: "I feel ridiculously blessed to take a sabbatical that uses the other side of my brain." However, Penn noted that it was an "incredible opportunity" to have gotten a guest arc on the last season of How I Met Your Mother, especially because that's how he met Rob Greenberg, the executive producer on We Are Men. Of Penn's Barack Obama link, O'Connell joked, "Every phone call he gets, we ask, 'Is that the president?!'"
  • The show centers on four men bonding over broken relationships while living at an upscale apartment complex, but that doesn't mean it's only a show for men. Smith, who plays the rookie in the group, explained why women will also love the show: "You've got a couple wounded puppies; they have these bad ideas and you're watching them bump their heads on the wall." Penn agreed: "Dudes give each other the worst advice ever . . . we approach women so badly, there's a comedy in that."
