Another one bites the dust? Viggo Mortensen recently dropped a bombshell about the future of his career, telling Men's Journal in an interview that he's going to quit acting altogether.
Mortensen is currently promoting his film The Road with Charlize Theron, but I'm not sure what will become of his rumored two projects in the pipeline, A Wing and a Prayer and Vanikoro.
He did mention that he would come back for a possible sequel to Eastern Promises and The Hobbit prequels, which says to me that he's not exactly quitting acting, he's taking a break. It would be sad to see Mortensen bid farewell to Hollywood, and it would be even more depressing to see him follow in Joaquin Phoenix's bizarre footsteps. What do you make of Mortensen's declaration — will he really quit acting?

I see him taking a break, maybe even a long one but then coming back when he misses it. I've never seen him as someone in it for the money.
1Viggo is doing a play in Madrid this fall, so he is definitely still working. The man made six movies in the past five years and has spent most of those five years travelling extensively promoting all of those films and doing lots of interviews and photo shoots. He has lots of interests aside from acting (photogaphy, painting, poetry, his publishing house, etc.) and would like to have time to concentrate on those things for a while.
I think he will take a well-deserved break and be back. After he wins an Oscar for his role in The Road next spring, of course!
2Kiefer Sutherland took a break (and became a rodeo cowboy!) and then came back better than ever. Sometimes it's a good thing.
3i wouldn't be surprised if a break is coming up but i'm not always so quick to believe that folks 'quit' acting all together. i wonder if there's something going on in his life or if he's just not overly thrilled with the roles that he's getting and wants to take a step back for a little bit. we'll just have to wait and see i guess.
4I think and hope it's just a long break, and nothing permanent.
5I think it's a break after doing some seriously intense projects that required a lot of traveling.
6Maybe he wants a break from taking his clothes off all the time.
7viggo who????........who cares
8I love Viggo, especially in Eastern Promises. If I were an actor of his caliber I would definitely take a break and just enjoy life for a little. He can come back later on down the line.
9If he gets fat and grows a hobo beard, I think I will actually cry.
10He wants more time to go out with princess heroine and chase the magic dragon. While he achieved greatness in one corner of his career, he feels like has neglected the tabloid side and will be generating tabloid news to emulate his sisters like paris, lindsy, etc. Viggo needs time to date more men and think about his future. You go girl!
11His mom and stepdad live here in very upstate NY and he is always here at community events and hanging around. He is very unassuming. I think he is very close to his mom and he visits often. Its a river community and he spends alot of time here in the summer. His folks are great people. So i wouldn't be surprised to see him maybe semi-retire for a while.
12No...he'll take a break most likely. Like an earlier poster said he has made so many movies and promoted them, so maybe he just wants a rest.
Besides quite a few actors say they will quit and then come back to acting.
13Though I have never read the book, I am a huge fan of Viggo M. ever since his small part in The Witness with Harrison Ford. And though I saw someone refer to him as god in an earlier post, he actually grabbed my heart playing Lucifer in The Prophecy. The only time I fell in love with the devil. I have followed his career diligently ever since. His roles are so diverse and he becomes whoever he plays. He is totally amazing. To lose him as an actor would be a huge loss.
14Did anyone actually READ the article? He never said he was quitting acting "altogether"! He said he didn't know what his future held, he wanted to explore some other creative endeavors, and he had no plans to act at the present time. That's a FAR CRY from "quitting acting altogether." Having read every word of the article, I never once got the impression that Viggo was out of the acting game... yet again, someone overzealous reporters just looking for drama!
15If he is purpose driven, as other articles have indicated, maybe he will find a higher purpose than acting. An actor is limited to selecting roles, maybe he will write or produce something with a message that is uniquely his.
16You have tested it and writing form your personal experience or you find some information online?
17I just like the style you took with this article. It is not often that you just find a subject so concise and enlightening.
