It's hard to believe there was a time when Disney animation was in a major slump, but it's true. In the years between 1984 and 1994, the studio had picked itself back up after creating mediocre animated films, eventually getting back in the game with classics like The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast. Such is the subject of the documentary Waking Sleeping Beauty, which shows how a dedicated young group of animators returned the Disney name to its former glory.
Told through interviews from the '80s, the movie looks to be a story of triumph and vintage icons — it's worth watching simply for a glimpse at a young Tim Burton at his desk. As a Disney and Pixar lover, I'm eager to see how one of the most respected studios turned itself around (and how they managed to decline in the first place).
