The Vampire Diaries Recap "Before Sunset"

The Vampire Diaries "Before Sunset": The Good, The Bad, and The Bloody

I didn't really expect things to get that crazy on The Vampire Diaries until next week's season finale, but wow, this week is full of intensity. There are a few big fights, a little bit of vampire torture, and though Alaric is the villain of the episode, the group is victorious in taking down another of their foes amid the chaos. Bonnie gets to use her witchy skills, but she's not the only lady who's channeling her girl power this week; Elena gets pretty tough, not just relying on a Salvatore brother to save her this time.

We're gearing up for next week's finale, and though there's some obvious setup for the next episode, there's a pretty big event that happens this week. And as usual, there's also an ample amount of great moments and funny lines. So, to get to the good, the bad, and the bloody, just keep reading.

The Good

  • How intense is the opening scene? The newly remade super vampire killer Alaric takes his aim at his first victims, Caroline and Rebekah, who have a few moments of glory, but he overtakes them, snapping Caroline's neck in the school parking lot.
  • Caroline is the bait for Elena, who's the bait for Klaus, whom Alaric really wants to kill. The Salvatore brothers and Klaus put their heads together, and Bonnie has an idea to use a desiccation spell on Alaric, so she calls on her mother for help. The spell stops a vampire's heart, but Bonnie has to find "a balance" among the living — meaning she also has to stop a human's heart for it to work. They pick Jeremy, because that kid hasn't been through enough.
  • While they wait for Klaus, Alaric tortures Caroline and challenges Elena to kill her. She raises a stake, but tosses some vervain on Alaric, freeing Caroline and leading to a faceoff between Elena and Alaric in the hall. Klaus and the Salvatore brothers battle it out with Alaric when they get there, and just before Klaus stops Alaric's heart, Bonnie loses the connection, but again, Elena comes to their rescue. She surmises that Esther linked Alaric's life to hers, and if she dies, he dies, so she threatens to kill herself. She's right, because Alaric yells at her to stop, giving Klaus time to escape with Elena.
  • Elena comes to at Klaus's, where he's draining her of all her blood. It's not that he needs hybrid juice; he wants to make a "backup family" using her blood. Meanwhile, the Salvatore brothers wake up, confirming what Elena assumed about Esther linking her and Alaric, and sends the boys to save her. When they get to Klaus's, they finally get to use Bonnie's cool party trick, and the desiccation spell stops Klaus's heart. I don't know what to feel. Klaus isn't exactly dead, but he ain't alive either. So . . . maybe there's still hope?
  • I was so excited that Klaus is back to being so bad he's good that I won't let the episode's unhappy ending for him rain on my parade. He has a few great moments this week, like when he's so determined to get into the Gilbert house that he throws in anything he can find. He also shows his soft side, like when he finds Caroline in the hall, and tells her to go straight home, but my favorite Klaus moment of the week is, hands down, the line he says to Elena while he's taunting her about tearing the Salvatore brothers apart: "Just between us girls, who would you have picked?" Classic Klaus.
  • Elena comes home to a victory party to celebrate Klaus being gone, which consists of teenage tequila shots and toasts to a Klaus-free life. The mood is just a little too light, and right after Jeremy and Elena have a serious talk about Elena's life being at stake if she's linked to Alaric, Elena passes out on the floor, blood coming out of her mouth.

The Bad

  • The effects to make Alaric burn in the sun make him look like Red Hulk. Red Hulk angry! Red Hulk must kill vampire!
  • Sigh. The council meeting that Alaric calls to reveal that Sheriff Forbes has a vampire daughter and that Mrs. Lockwood has a werewolf/vampire son seems like it's supposed to build suspense for the finale, but it doesn't work that well. I guess it's bad news that the important people in town know that council members have vampire kids, but I'm sure someone will be able to compel the knowledge right out of them. I just have one wish for next week's finale: that we say goodbye to Alaric and his weak story lines once and for all.

The Bloody

  • And the award for nausea-inducing scene of the week goes to Elena and Caroline, when Elena has to pull out pencils from Caroline's hands. Congrats girls! You win a set of nice, dull markers to do all your homework with.

So let's go over what we have to look forward to in next week's finale: Elena's life hanging in the balance (yes, again), the council meeting that Alaric is so graciously hosting, and what happens when Stefan and Damon try to dump Klaus's body. Call me crazy, but even desiccated, I think Klaus, or someone in his family, will find a way for him to come back. A girl can dream, anyway. Oh, and there's that small matter of Elena having to choose which Salvatore brother she wants to be with, and which one she'll essentially send packing. No pressure.
