Undercovers Pilot Review
Pilot Scoop: Undercovers
My pilot scoops are chugging right along, and today I'm reviewing J.J. Abrams's spy dramedy Undercovers.

What it's about: Former CIA agents Samantha and Steven Bloom (Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Boris Kodjoe) run a successful catering company together and have plenty of money and a gorgeous home to show for it. Unfortunately, the same can't be said for their marriage, which is comfortable but lacking passion. When a friend gets into trouble, the husband and wife are pulled back into the spy world, where the danger and excitement of their missions provides a spark in their relationship.
Where it works: Mbatha-Raw and Kodjoe are believably sexy as a flawless-on-the-surface couple, and the pilot is smooth and stylish. It moves at a good enough pace and there are a few well-timed laughs (mostly from supporting characters gushing over one of the leads).
Where it doesn't: Maybe I'm just getting a little tired of the spy genre in general, but I expected more from J.J. Abrams. Considering this is the man that brought us Alias and Lost, I was hoping for something a bit more cutting edge than run-of-the-mill.
Am I hooked? Nah. I'll check out a few more episodes but if the show presents a new mission a week, I might just stick with my reigning spy show Chuck.
When it's on: Undercovers premieres Tuesday, September 22 at 8 p.m.
