Tree of Life, the Terrence Malik drama starring Brad Pitt and Sean Penn, has been in limbo for the last couple of years, but today it's finally seeing the light of day. The first trailer for the film is heavy, ominous, and has just a hint of magic. Set in the 1950s, we follow the upbringing of three boys as their parents (Brad Pitt and Jessica Chastain) commit themselves to teaching their sons the truths of the world. Though his wife warns him that he's being too hard on them, Pitt's character can't help but leave a lasting impression on his kids, particularly Jack.
Fast forward 40 some-odd years, and we see a forlorn-looking Jack (Sean Penn) reflecting on his childhood and pondering life's more difficult questions. I'm feeling kind of ambivalent about this one: it looks like it could be incredibly powerful or kind of a snoozefest. The film's release is set for May 2011, but watch the preview when you read more.
