The Box Office's Biggest Movies of 2013

The usual suspects ruled the box office in 2013: intergalactic villains, cuddly animated creatures, and flying heroes. Some movies are still counting — The Hunger Games: Catching Fire just climbed past $400 million (including 2014 profit) and Gravity has been earning steadily since October. Though it failed to surpass 2009's Star Trek in terms of profit, Stark Trek Into Darkness earned $228.8 million. Not a bad haul, especially considering it took in $70.2 million in its opening weekend.

The sixth installment in the Fast and Furious franchise earned $238.7 million, making it the top-grossing movie in the series by almost $30 million.

Boosted by 3D and IMAX ticket sales, Alfonso Cuarón's Gravity made $254.6 million. The space-set film dominated the box office during the month of October, helping make the otherwise weak month way more profitable, and it's still earning money in theaters.

The creepy-cuddly sequel Monsters University took in $268.5 million, proving adults and kids alike still love Mike and Sully. The movie out-earned the original by $12.6 million.

Disney's Frozen took advantage of the holiday season to catapult the film to a $271.8 million box office in 2013. The movie is still in theaters, meaning its total will just increase going forward.

Despite the film's lukewarm reviews, audiences flocked to see Henry Cavill portray Superman in Man of Steel. The action movie earned $291 million over the Summer.

Despicable Me 2 earned a massive $367.8 million, defeating the competition (including The Lone Ranger) over its Fourth of July opening weekend. The sequel crushed the original Despicable Me's total of $251.5 million.
