The Karate Kid: Wax On, Wax Awful
I knew going into this year's remake of The Karate Kid that it would never live up to my appreciation for the 1984 original starring Ralph Macchio and Pat Morita. I gave it the benefit of the doubt by judging it as if there were no predecessor to compare it to, but it doesn't matter: The Karate Kid fails on its own and as a remake.
The movie certainly strives to set itself apart. This time around, Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan play the karate student and teacher, respectively. As Dre, Smith is a cute young thing. His casting is the best thing the movie has to offer, but that's as far as my compliments for this film go. To hear more about what I didn't like about The Karate Kid, just keep reading

Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith admit their workout is less intense than son Jaden's at the LA premiere of The Karate Kid.
The Smiths Make Supporting Their Karate Kid a Family Affair
The entire Pinkett Smith family was out last night for the premiere of Jaden's new movie, The Karate Kid. Will and Jada were inseparable on the red carpet when they weren't posing with fans, family, and old friends like The Fresh Prince of Bel Air's Tatyana Ali. The evening belonged to Jaden and his costar Jackie Chan, as well as the original film's karate kid, Ralph Macchio. Jaden is having quite the week after the MTV Movie Awards where he joked about his ladies' man status and fought with Tom Cruise in the Les Grossman opening. Jaden may be becoming quite the celebrity just like his parents, but he apparently still feels as though his sister Willow usually gets more attention — during fights, he said, "I scream for my mom. She usually takes Willow's side. My dad takes Willow's side, too. That's why I usually hang out with my brother." Will has lately focused on playing the role of doting husband and father, but he's rumored be considering returning to the Men in Black franchise, this time in 3D.

Movie Preview: The Karate Kid
The remakes keep on coming (I know, I know, collective groan). We already heard news of Will Smith's son Jaden and Jackie Chan stepping into roles for the update on The Karate Kid, and now we're getting a peek at the first trailer.

Judging by the preview, the general premise appears to be the same (boy gets harassed, trains in martial arts, and then faces his tormentor in competition), but this new version is definitely geared more to a family audience. Jaden Smith is teeny tiny in the Ralph Macchio part, the bullies are basically a Beijing elementary school yard gang, and a sweet, but baby-faced love interest is sitting in for Elisabeth Shue.
All of this just makes me want to go back and watch the original (and Mr. Miyagi's wax on, wax off scene) and leave this new update for the kiddies. I just can't get myself excited for the story when it's taken on such a younger twist, and I found myself chuckling over the film's villains — who are supposed to be threatening. Still, Taraji P. Henson is playing the mom, so that's a plus in my column.

Jaden Smith = The Next Karate Kid?

We all know that Hollywood is extremely remake-happy these days, so I'm not even going to resist the Karate Kid remake news because it was probably bound to happen, right? Now moving onto the casting: Jaden Smith is first in line to play the lead role, the Kid himself, in a new version of the 1984 pop culture staple. Variety has more info:
The script is being written by Chris Murphy, and the film will shoot next year in Beijing and other cities. While the new film will be set in that exotic locale, it will borrow elements of the original plot, wherein a bullied youth learns to stand up for himself with the help of an eccentric mentor.
The younger Smith, who next stars in The Day the Earth Stood Still, is a martial arts practitioner.
That little Jaden Smith is so adorable. Thoughts on the next Karate Kid? Are you annoyed this is being remade at all? If it has to happen, is Jaden a good fit?

This week's recast challenge was a tough one, especially when it came to casting the wise old Mr. Miyagi. I loved the idea of casting George Takei, as suggested by lem0n and sarap 007. I also liked some of the picks for the part of Ali, such as SU3's Mandy Moore and sasha9000's Ginnifer Goodwin. But overall I was totally wowed by WhiplashGirlchild's recast list, so she is the winner of this week's challenge!

Here's an oldie but goodie that was so cool the first time around it spawned several sequels — including The Next Karate Kid, starring Hilary Swank. Given the opportunity to recast The Karate Kid, who would you put in the part of wise Mr. Miyagi and his "grasshopper," Daniel? What about Daniel's lady friend Ali and her mean ex-boyfriend/Daniel's enemy Johnny?
Leave your entry in the comment section below, and I'll pick one winner to feature Tuesday, May 22, complete with a "new" cast photo. To see a list of characters to recast and a photo of the BuzzSugar t-shirt, read more
