Things have moved pretty quickly for the Twilight saga; New Moon is in theaters and Eclipse has already finished filming, so all eyes are on the final, challenging book Breaking Dawn.
Though there's no director hired for the last chapter yet, the latest news is that Summit wants Chris Weitz to direct, and they may split Breaking Dawn into two movies, like the treatment of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg is attached to write Breaking Dawn (hopefully she sees this letter).
If Weitz takes on the last film, he'd be the only director to helm more than one Twilight movie, and though I thought that he handled the special effects in New Moon very well, he's expressed trepidation at the idea. I'm not opposed to a different director taking on Breaking Dawn, personally — I'm anxious to see the job David Slade does on the more physical Eclipse; he might impress more than Weitz. And of course, a completely different, fourth director is intriguing as well. What do you think?

House of Fraser
How about: should Breaking Dawn be made into a movie at all? Seriously, I know some Twilight fans who aren't keen on the idea. Something about it not translating well to film
1i can't stand the idea of Breaking Dawn being 2 movies. UGH!!!!!
2I think two movies in unnecessary and a total cash-grab by Summit. While there is A LOT to cover in Breaking Dawn, making it into two movies would leave the story disjointed and incomplete. I don't get the big deal of it just being a longer movie; as the last in the series, I highly doubt any fan is going to object to watching more Twilight onscreen, you know, because having to look at that hideous dude who plays Edward for 3 hours rather than 4 would just be torture!
3I completely agree with genesisrocks. I loved the books, but the fourth book is just a mess. Making it into 2 films would just make 2 messes. They should take the wedding from the beginning of Breaking Dawn, slap it to the end of Eclipse, and call it a freakin' day!
4I can't answer this poll until i see what David Slade did with the action/fight scenes in 'Eclipse'. I would like to see someone condense 'Breaking Dawn' to one movie. two movies is dragging the 'Twlight' hype out too far, for me, maybe not some of the younger fans. Someone has to direct the fight scene w the Volturi retreating and Bella, Edward and Renesmee living happily ever after (closure for the fans). Chris Weitz brought awesome cinematography to 'New Moon'. If he does not direct it, maybe he could contribute to it in that way.
5i have to wait until eclipse comes out before i make any judgment who should direct breaking dawn. also, i think summit should ditch rosenberg. i don't need choppy scenes or important parts in the book taken out. though, i really can't say much with breaking dawn. i don't what happen with meyer's part, but it was a bummer with the last book. didn't like it so much.
6agreed - must see eclipse before making judgement. though, i would like to see consistency among directors JUST AS LONG AS IT'S NOT HARDWICKE!
2 movies of breaking dawn? unless you give me 2 hours of the volturi, then no.
7Breaking dawn sounds like a movie for perverts and weirdos. Edward has to eat his way into Bellas belly for the baby to be born and Jacob falls in love with the newborn. that sounds sick to me. - the movie shouldn't be made.
8NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
PLEASE NOOOOO
IM SORRY BUT CATHERINE HARDWICKE WAS MUCHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH BETTER AS A DIRECTOR THAN C.W...
9ACTUALLY, I LIKE NEW MOON VERY MUCH, BUT THE GRASP... OR PERSPECTIVE THAT SHE GIVES TO TWILIGHT IS THE BEST. BESIDE, I THINK WOMAN DO THE BEST WORK AT "ROMANCE MOVIES"
Here is the problem with Catherine Harwicke-
10Catherine made Twilight the way she saw it in her head; For instance the way Edward shows absolutely NO affection for Bella at all in Twilight, where as if any of you have read Twilight or Midnight Sun you know he is already in love with her and knows it the night before he saves her in Port Angeles. There is also no playfulness to Edward in the movie like there is in the book, Edward looks like marble his personality isn't suppose to be. Your actually not even sure he likes her until you watch the beginning of New Moon. Even in the end of Twilight the film when Bella is attacked by James, Edward is just staring and stoic asking Carlisle for advice, whilst in the book Bella describes his reaction to her being bit as "Tearless Sobbing". He is suppose to be literally dying inside at the thought of losing her. Catherine Hardwicke epically failed to show any of this in her film whereas Chris Weitz embodied the portrayal of these characters as they were intended to be written.
Couldnt agree more CashBunny, so Im for Chris now, but Im also first want to wait for Eclipse, but fat NO for splitting Breaking Dawn into 2 movies...
11I think Chris would be perfect for Breaking Dawn. He did a beautiful job with New Moon. I really hope they don't split the book into 2 films because that would just be too much. Whoever takes on this film is really going to have to treat it delicately. Breaking Dawn is filled with a lot of moments that will not translate well to film. I fear when the movie does come out it will be more of a comedy than teenage drama.
12I don't think he should because he did such a good job on New Moon and Breaking Dawn is such a train wreck. Especially if they feel a need to break it into two movies that would be career suicide! I mean call me crazy, but I dread seeing that movie and at the same time I can't wait to watch it with a RiffTrax! Breaking Dawn will be the worst movie I will ever see and should not be spread out into two horrendous movies.
13Kazagirl I'm totally with you on the comedy thing!
Totally agree with CashBunny also; NO Hardwicke. So much of the criticism and hating on Twilight is grounded in the interpretation of Edward as having no personality and just being a creepy stalker, etc. which is not at ALL how he is in the book. So many people fell in love with the story and him because of how sweet he is and the fact that despite being over a hundred years old, he is just as new and naive at being in love as Bella is (that's kind of one of clutch to the heart of the story!!). Their relationship is all about choice and they are both just fumbling their way through it and doing the best they can, which is intensified of course by him being a vampire. Their love so powerful, because they are BOTH so in love and make the choice that the rest "doesn't matter" (one of the most crucial scenes in the development of their relationship that was reduced to a harried moment in the movie). The only scene in Twilight that gave Edward any chance to show emotion was dinner at the Cullen's, when like a normal person, he was embarrassed by his family and nervous about what Bella would think of his room, taste in music, etc.
Weitz did a really good job, though I think since the depth of their love was so skimmed over in the first one, the next movies (especially BD, if they have any hope in Hell of getting away with the sex bruises and rib-breaking baby stuff) need to go a little more into the core of their relationship, so it doesn't come across as simply as an irrational teenage crush. When you know it's more than that, you can accept and understand what goes down.
Soooo...to summarize what turned out to be a ridiculously long post (sorry! just had to get that out), other than no to Hardwicke, can't make a call until I see Eclipse, but New Moon did nothing to take Chris Weitz out of the running, and a big thing in his favour (and the movie's) was that he obviously fit so well with the cast, crew, etc.
14I'm not a diehard fan, so I haven't seen New Moon yet and can't comment on Weitz. But I have read all of the books and they definitely should NOT make Breaking Dawn into two movies. In fact, they should just throw out the book and let the screenwriters decide how to make the fourth movie. The other three books are light fun. The last is HORRIBLE.
15Yes, if for no other reason than that the vampires were finally scary under his watch. He should get it for the Volturi fight scene alone. The movies will continue to improve, simply because SM included more action in each subsequent novel. As far as BD being split into two parts---yes, numbers game dictates that it must be split.
I'm a writer, so forgive me for droning on about the technical aspects. Your average popular fiction book is 100,000 words, which equals a 300 page paperback. A screenplay is 120 pages or under---and most studios prefer under for economic considerations, as in 105 pages, double spaced. That's generally about 26,000 words, or less than a third of a paperback. You see the problem, right? Even if you get 120 pages in your screenplay, you're still losing two-thirds of the story. Now, do that well, would you? Keep all the favorite things, whilst ditching the stuff that doesn't work, make it exciting, and watchable---and do it in under two hours because we (the studio) want a. more showings per day, per theater and if we keep it under two hours it will be easier to sell on the syndication circuit, not to mention the cost on the DVD won't be as bad. It's amazing Melissa Rosenberg managed to get out what she did, because, truly, she didn't have much to work with in terms of original, well-adapted to be filmed material.
As one of my favorite authors described the optioning/film making process: "It's like someone wants to take a picture of your much loved child, but they tell you they can only get their big toe or part of their right hand in the photo. Not their eyes. Not their smile---it has to be one of these, and it would help if you made the choice." Breaking Dawn is overlarge, but SM can get away with their size (which I can tell you most publishers would raise a hissy fit about.) because she sells books. But there is absolutely NO WAY the screenwriter and any director can have any sort of continuity which will also please the fan base if they condense BD down into one movie. It simply won't work.
16i know that everyone seemed to love NM more than Twilight but i'm still a catherine fan since i thought that the first one was by far the best. we'll have to see how eclipse turns out. i just want them to start filming breaking dawn soon so that i don't have to wait a full year to see the final installation
17I had issues with Hardwick's interpretation of Edward. However, she captured this beautiful chemistry between them very well. CW on the other hand seems to just skim over it. The most layered scenes in the book is the break up and reunification scene. Those scenes where rushed and sacrificed. He didn't even come close to capturing the depth of those scenes. It's obvious he concentrated more on special effects and the whole chippendale muscle men thing.
I know a man is doing Eclipse so I'm expecting pretty much the same thing. I think they should hire Hardwick just to shoot the romantic scenes.
18Is there a single person who read the last book that thinks it should be two movies? I mean everywhere I go everyone is completely against it. You would think Summit would see this.
19I agree that Hardwicke did capture the chemistry/tension very well, and don't get me wrong, I LOVE the Twilight movie. I just wanted more out of the key scenes behind there relationship for the rest of the story to build on. And you're right, New Moon did skim the important bits and run through them too quickly (like when they're reunited and Edward thinks he's in heaven). My biggest beef with NM was that the scenes that made me cry in the book didn't in the movie. I think the orchestral soundtrack also had something to do with that; compared to Twilight, it was cheesy and lacking depth and emotion.
I'm hoping Eclipse focuses less on shirtless werewolves and more on the emotion, but considering David Slade's previous films, I'm not sure that'll be the case. We need a director who can balance the action and emotion, kick some ass and make us cry, if you will!
20And by "there" I meant "their" - I shuddered when I reread my own post!! lol
21i know the first movie was cheap but i liked the tone of it. It was dark and embodied what I personally imagined forks to be like. Everything from the drab cinematography to the score...it was a great tone. New movie was so cheesy! the score was crap and the tone was lacking. Visually the movie looked good, but the feel of it was off. I certainly hope eclipse is better and that somoene new does breaking dawn!
22I agree with slikkback. Neither Twilight nor New Moon could be considered good films by any means, but Twilight was infinitely better. I liked the modern, edgy feel of it - it minimised the cheesy dialogue. Not to mention the Edward/Bella chemistry was off the charts! New Moon was sooo cheesy. The score intensified the cheesiness so much that it was distracting! Another thing that was distracting? The vampire make-up. All I could do was stare at Robert Pattinson's burgundy lipstick.
I also preferred the Edward of Twilight. At least he had a few light moments. Edward in New Moon was so stoic and stiff I wanted to shake him. He was also styled far better in the first film. He looked about 30 years old in New Moon.
That being said, CW put together some really visually beautiful scenes (i.e. Italy.) And the soundtrack is pretty good.
23I say Quentin Tarantino should direct, take it in a new direction and make the plot way better...kill off 99% of the characters!
24Some people have made a good point elsewhere and that is that BD can be made in one movie, it isn't the best book in the series and there is a lot of filler. If they can take pivotal moments, key scenes/dialogue, and the storyline but translate it into a shorter film that would be best. The CGI in New Moon is good but could be toned down a bit and I like and agree with #22 and 23 about Twilight tone...I think it fits the series best.
So combine that with a more subdued CGI of New Moon and maybe a new director the last film could be decent.
25I think the only way they could make it work (the two films thing) is to FILM the whole thing but release it in two movies, like Lord of the Rings did. But I prefer it in one and I also agree with #22 and 23 but that doesn't mean I want CH back or CW but I will wait until I see Eclipse.
26Sigh.... I'm conflicted over the whole thing. Chris Weitz did an amazing job with New Moon as far as the overall look of the movie and the special effects, but I feel like Catherine did a better job of portraying Edward and Bella's love.
I thought Twilight did a much better job than New Moon of bringing more out with Edward's character. I was surprised but I found him to be cold and controlling in New Moon and I wasn't expecting that. Or maybe it's not the directors or the actors but the screen writer who isn't getting some of the scenes right.
The scene that bugged me the most in Twilight was the fight scene where Edward is asking Carlisle what to do about Bella. He doesn't seem to feel the kind of emotion he did in the book. I chalk it up to it being the very first scene they shot and I don't think RP had quite settled into the role yet.
In New Moon the scene that irritated me the most was after Edward sent Bella crashing into the table and he didn't seem to show any emotion at all about Bella being hurt. I'm a die hard Team Edward/ RP fan but perhaps it's not so much the directors that aren't getting some of the scenes right but RP. He plays Edward with much constraint, perhaps too much at times. Or maybe it's Melissa who isn't getting it right? Edward in the books has a great sense of humor.
I'm not looking forward to Eclipse at all - it was my least favourite book in the series. But, it will be interesting to see what David Slade brings to the table.
It doesn't really matter to me if Breaking Dawn is made into two movies. I don't believe it's about doing justice to the book, I think it's more about the studio wanting to get every last drop of money from the fans.
27I'm not saying that Twilight was perfect - far from it - but the story flowed, the scenes worked, and I think Hardwicke captured the chemistry between Edward and Bella way better than CW. Something was terribly off in New Moon. The story was rushed and it felt almost as if the actors were lost or bored (except for Billy Burke and perhaps Taylor)... As if Chris forgot to direct them and was too focused on special effects. Not to mention that the score was terrible and wardrobe choices awful!
28Breaking Dawn was my least favourite in the series and I'm hoping they'll use the book only as a guideline. If they plan on showing all the gore - perhaps Tarantino isn't such a bad idea...
No, not two movies please! Talk about just caring about making money. I have no idea how anyone will successfully translate Breaking Dawn onto the screen. That book is something else.
Didn't think either Twilight or New Moon were good, but I believe something was terribly off in New Moon. I laughed in parts where I absolutely wasn't suppose to and it was way too cheesy. The only thing I liked about it was Charlie's and Jacob's character because something was off with Edward and Bella.
29PLEASE NOOO...
30I saw NEW MOON and i think Chris made a horrible job!
I was team Edward - but when i saw the movie i changed my mind!!
In New Moon Rob was such a bad actor!
The storyline was bad, the music didn't matched (like in Twilight), the make-up was bad (hate Edwards hair in the movie) it was too cheesy (Alice vision!! come on - it was ridiculous!!) and i have no favourite scene - the movie was too bad (i could cry)!!!!!!
LOVE Twilight HATE - New Moon (hate Chris for that)
Rob was stiff and stoic in NM. Hardwicke captured Bella and Edward's fragile relationship better. Male directors are more about the action and cinematography. I don't understand the "Breaking Dawn" bashing. It's my favorite, probably because it's more of an adult relationship, their romance culminates, and though I'm disturbed about the Jacob/Renesmee relationship, it brings closure. I really hope "Midnight Sun" is finished and released.
31Some of the scenes really were laughable - especially Alice's vision of Edward and Bella together...
32I really don't want Chris Weitz to direct Breaking Dawn. It's not gonna come out right.
And please, whoever does it: Don't make two bad movies instead of one good one!
I did not enjoy New Moon so I don't want Chris Weitz to direct it. I can't believe the positives on here are more than the negatives. New Moon was poorly edited. Middle was way too long and ending was way too rushed.
33Alice's vision of Bella as a vampire solidifies why CW should not be involved in BD.
R.P. and K.S. were so void of any type of emotion through out the entire movie, more than usual. Jacob's character was the carrying the entire movie, I think he did an amazing job considering what he was given to work with.
34I love the job that Chris did on New Moon and if they did make Breaking Dawn (I don't think they should) I would prefer him to Hardwick. Hardwick's vision in Twilight was all wrong and made the movie hard to watch. I think that the wedding should go into Eclipse and that should be it. The Breaking Dawn story is way to crazy to be able to make into a movie worth watching. They would have to change the story in so many ways that it would no longer really be Breaking Dawn. I can't wait to see Eclipse as it was my favorite book of the line. I have high hopes for it!
35I voted no, because he obviously is exhausted and worn out from the press tour. Let him take care of his family. Stephenie Meyer expressed interest in different directors for each book's interpretation. I'm curious to see how David Slade does, but I'm wondering if this book needs a woman at the helm. We shouldn't have to choose between awesome effects and great emotion and romance.
36I loved New Moon better than twilight! So i answered yes. I don't know how i feel about BD as split into two movies. There's a lot to cover but i have mixed feelings on it. Also, I we don't know how Eclipse is going to turn out! We should give David Spade a chance to wow us. Honestly, i really don't care what they decide to do just as long as BD gets made into a movie and they get a great director!!!!!!
xoxo,
37- J
of sorry i spelled David Spade instead of David Slade.
38Catherine hardwicke just plain sucked! she didn't capture the romance of edward and bella accurately. she was way to worried about action. chris weitz did an awesome job on new moon. at least he finally had them saying i love you to each other, which should have been captured in twilight and c'mon the meadow scene in twilight could have been better. new moon not only had the action in it, butfinally showed the love. i think he'd be great for bd.
39Sometimes I think they shouldn't even make BD. The reason being they will probably change so much of the book to make it viewable by audiences. I love the books, I have no desire to see them massacred on the screen which is what they'll probably end up doing it to make all the intense scenes viewable.
40I don't know why everyone is going ape over Chris Weitz. He seems really lovely and everything and did a good job with New Moon but what about Slade?
We have not even seen any of his work yet. Perhaps that is what Summit are waiting for. To see who delivers the best interpretation. Breaking Dawn will be a nerve wracking experience for whoever takes it on. Its a crazy book and covers everything from the sublime to the ridiculous.
They should get Tarantino in to direct the birth scene!! lol.
There is a lot to consider. From Isle Esme to Bella being able to project protection bubbles.
Good luck I say to whoever gets it.
41We need to see Slade's Eclipse first to decide. I liked Twilight, but I definitely agree with Cashbunny about what Katherine did with Edward. I was reading Twilight yesterday for the fourth time and I really love the meadow scene and they just basically skipped over that in the movie. Edward changes in that scene and becomes playful and almost carefree and the movie does not portray that. As far as BD is concerned, I think two movies would be awesome. The more the better. The ending of the first should be Bella waking up, eyes glowing red, as a vampire. Then we can have a whole movie with Bella as vampire.
Also, for that anon post that claims Edward has to chew at Bella's stomach to get Renesme out--you are so wrong, sorry.
42Oh and Alices' vision in NM was really laughable. So silly.
43I think it should be two movies simply becuase of the content. It's my absolute favorite book. I don't want it hacked down like twilight was. Twilight was such a platonic mess, all of the important emotional scenes were ditched so he could call her a spider monkey and jump in trees.. omg. so irritating.
I totally agree with fly, the end of the first should be her as a vampire. Its has enough content and a cliff hanger conclusion for it to be good, and a whole movie really needs to be dedicated to her life as a vampire, with the learning, the baby, the volturi, the preperation for all outcomes and the gathering.. yeah, definitely 2. I just hope they are somewhat okay. There is a lot of emotional content in Breaking Dawn that helps outweigh all of the action and somewhat disturbing experiences.
I'm looking forward to seeing Eclipse and don't have an opinion on directors until then.
44Another thing -
Yeah, alice's vision was horribly cheesy, but it was the only part in the film i cringed at. Twilight? i was constantly cringing and i cant even watch it more then twice, it was just too much.
45i like consistency, but i'm curious to see how eclipse pans out
46I want to see Breaking Dawn but if they need time to get it right. I don't mind waiting. Get an excellent script, an even greater director so it'll will top the first three.
47New Moon=Awesome, that's all I need to say.
48it was an awesome.. i liked all the graphics they were great... and i know that if he does get to be the director of breaking dawn he will do an awesome job...i hope he gets the job...
49Chris did a great job on New Moon So Yes
