In college, I was fairly obsessed with Built to Spill — particularly the addictive 1999 album Keep It Like a Secret. But in recent years, I've had a "what have you done for me lately?" attitude toward the Bosie, ID, band, who seemed to be sticking too close to the sound they knew worked.
Now Built to Spill is winning me back with this new digital single, "They Got Away," which is available on iTunes. A while back, frontman Doug Martsch told Pitchfork that he and his bandmates have been known to get together for reggae jams, and that influence definitely comes through on this moody but surf- and ska-influenced tune.
