Wednesday's So You Think You Can Dance was part dance showcase, part comedy show — thanks to Ellen DeGeneres, who joined Mary, Nigel, and Mia on the judging table. Which is not to say she "judged," per se; mostly she raved about the dancers and made jokes about "nailing it." It's obvious she really loves the show, though, and her enthusiasm came through in her goofy comments.

As for the dancing, I'm with Nigel: The first half of the show felt weirdly flat, with routines that were fine but not particularly exciting. The second half of the show was another story, though, with some numbers that could be serious contenders to add to the show's Emmy haul next year. I have no idea how the elimination will shake out tonight — none! What do you think?
To see my thoughts on the night and check out pictures of the routines, just read more.
Evan and Janette's jazz — This routine from Sonya required a lot of intensity, and I'm not sure either one of them totally got there, but they both fit well into their characters, slapping hands on each other's mouths and pounding the floor hard. Nigel said he was glad to see Evan bring more, Mary said Janette can't make a wrong step, and Mia said that even though Evan will never be dark and twisty, he made a big step — and Janette was her "favorite favorite favorite."
Brandon and Jeanine's waltz — I was so excited to see these two paired together, but this wasn't one of my favorite waltzes ever on the show. It seemed a little too measured, like they both had to think seriously about every move. Nigel trashed the music and said he wanted them to show more control, Mary said even a professional would have struggled with the tempo but called it respectable, and Mia said there were too many hiccups and not enough fairytale.
Melissa and Ade's cha cha — How fun to see these two back together! This cha cha was fun, but it was also one of the only times I think Melissa's revealed herself as a ballerina. She seemed very careful with her movements, executing all the steps but not really adding much slinkiness. I definitely appreciated Ade's "SexyBack walk, though. Nigel said they needed to let their natural sexiness out, Mary wanted them to sink lower into their hips, and Mia said it was Ade's worst of the season.
Jason and Kayla's Broadway — Some fun choreography in this one — I loved the part where Kayla kicked over Jason's head and he kind of popped up off the floor. In terms of the two of them as Broadway dancers, Jason seems more comfortable in the style than Kayla, who's almost too . . . upright? Jason seems to let his body go a little more. Nigel said it showed off their talents well, while Mia totally disagreed with me and said Kayla could take Broadway by storm.
Evan and Janette's rumba — Man, I don't know — I just could not get into this. I was looking forward to seeing fiery Janette (and fiery Janette making Evan get a little sexy himself), but mostly I was a little bored. Maybe I just don't like rumba? Evan could have literally not even been on stage for me; what attention I did pay was entirely to Janette. Nigel wanted to see Evan perform more with his face, Mary thought Evan partnered Janette well, and Mia thought Evan was sexy with a Zoolander face.
Brandon and Jeanine's pop jazz — In terms of tough love, Laurieann Gibson might be giving Mia a run for her money. From the looks of the clip, she was serious about turning Brandon and Jeanine into soldiers. And I think it worked: Jeanine in particular really hit a new level for me, and Brandon got to show his strength. Nigel said it was the first great performance of the night, Mary got all screamy, and Mia praised them for being really inside of the dance.
Melissa and Ade's contemporary — Well, I'm not allowed to be mean about the routine about breast cancer, am I? Not that I would want to, honestly; I thought the two of them danced this routine so well, with power and grace and the kind of trust in each other that can only come from all the weeks they worked together. But am I just horribly callous for feeling weary of the "issue" routines? (Probably.) That said, it's a rare routine that can bring all the judges to tears — even Nigel.
Jason and Kayla's hip hop — This was a great closing number and my favorite Shane Sparks routine of the season by far. It probably shouldn't surprise me at this point that Kayla's good at something, but hip hop seemed like it would be a stretch for her — and nope. She fell straight into the character of the routine. And Jason, with that makeup, was solidly creepy. Nigel said they knocked it out of the park, Mary liked seeing them get creepy, and Mia loved it.
The solos — Highlights for me included Evan, Kayla, and Ade. I was glad to see Janette go outside of her style for her solo — and I'd be curious to see Melissa try the same if she's here another week.
Best of the night: Brandon and Jeanine's jazz, Jason and Kayla's hip hop . . . and, yes, the cancer dance.
In trouble: Man, Melissa and Ade are probably lucky for getting that last routine; they were having a rough night up till then, but I think that'll save them. I could see Evan being in for a trip to the bottom . . . and maybe Jeanine? This is going to be an interesting night.

melissa and ade and Tyce....made me cry so hard last night! and then having to watch Nigel get teary also! put me over the edge!
1Tyce Diorio's routine touched me deeply and it was performed beautifully. But, as Melissa said, the routine was more about emotion than it was about dance and technique. That said, I think it may be the routine that saves them from going home tonight. But who will go home? I honestly have no clue. Probably Evan, maybe Melissa or Jeanine (though that would make me very sad). Looking forward to seeing the 100th episode extravaganza tonight.
2No one said they were getting tired "issue" dances when Kayla and Kupono (name?) danced their drug dance, definitely an "issue" dance. Now that Ade and Melissa have people are tired of it. The person on entertainment weekly said the same thing about being tired of these kind of dances. Well I'm not,and I thought it was beautiful.
3I am tired of all the ballroom dances! I will take a contemporary "issue" dance over a ballroom number any day. Really, what happened to the contemporary, and jazz numbers?
One more comment, because I'm getting really annoyed at comments that I'm reading on the internet about the "cancer dance". People are saying that their upset because it wasn't about dancing and more about the emotion. Remember the dance last year by Twitch and Katee, the door dance? Not much dancing at all, but everyone loved it. Why? because it was Twitch and Katee.
4Ok that's my last comment, I will step down from my soap box.
If I am going with what dancer's are left who aren't as trained and technical then I would say Evan and Janette. However, as with most dancers from the past who are popular not so much because of dance but personality, they have an edge. Both seem to have a huge fan base.
I honestly don't have any idea who is going tonight. I think the only sure thing is Melissa and Ade will be staying.
5My top 4:
Melissa, Ade, Janine, Brandon.
Also, I tend to sort of hate when they make dances into stories. It cheeses it up instead of focusing on the dancing.
Also, I'd like to say how jazzed I was that there was a new hip hop choreographer. I'm sooooo over Tab and Napoleon.
6While the Tyce breast cancer inspired dance was pretty it seemed contrived... kind of like "I'm looking for an emmy nod". Yes it was powerful and emotional but couldnt it have been about someone going through a difficult time too? Would it have changed the feeling behind it if she didn't have the scarf on her head? Sometimes I just wish we could watch the dance before they explain it to the detail. Let me interpret it.
I thought Jason and Kayla had the best overall night. The Shane Sparks routine was my fav. I can't imagine Ade or Brandon going home over Evan, but you never know with America, apparently he has quite the following. Next I'd say Melissa I thought her solo was boring and scattered, but I think the contemp. dance will save her which sucks because I think Jeanine and Jeanette are very fiesty and fun to watch and Kayla has also had some nice moments (though the judges might talk to her up too much causing her to lose votes).
Anyways... I'm glad the night improved in the second half!
7Top 4: Ade, Brandon, Jeanine & Janette.
I'm with you Smoo15, I'm soo over NappyTabs. I looove Laurie Anne!!! She was so great on Making the Band, even though Diddy did fire her at one point.
I did enjoy Tyce's routine, but I felt Mia Michael's father/daughter dance from S3 was more moving, but that's just me. I can't believe Nigel got so choked up! I don't think he's ever gotten like that before on the show.
I feel bad for any of the girls paired w/ Evan, he's just not strong enough (as a dancer, not physically) to partner with. I hope America votes for who performed best, not just who they like.
8I loved the hip hop and pop jazz routines. They were just done so well. Anyone who has seen Making the Band knows Laurie Anne is tough but brings out the best in her dancers.
I think Evan is not on the same level personality and comfort as the male dancers who are left.
9I thought the "cancer" dance was brilliantly performed- I just wish that the judges weren't so over-the-top in their critiques. I get it!!! Just seeing Melissa mist up after she performed had me going. And then the judges (save Ellen) yapping away about Emmy nods ruined that moment for me.
Jeanine and Ade had the best solos of the night, IMHO.
Anyway, I'll stand by what I say every week- which is that Evan should leave. Please leave!!!! For the girls, I think Melissa would be the logical choice given her overall performance- but I think Kayla might be in trouble.
10it's really interesting that consistently throughout the season, the judges have adored the women more than the men. i feel like if you looked at the votes too you'd see that the girls probably get more than the guys. it hasn't always been that cut and dry in past seasons.
11Evan is by far the weakest dancer still on the show - he can move on stage, but any dance that requires strength of personality or a hard edge are utterly beyond him - he's just a nice boy. So that Rhumba was painful - poor Janette barely had a partner. I hope that doesn't hurt her - she is my favorite favorite favorite too.
The issue dances are one of the things that make this show special - it's not just dancers trying to look pretty - it's adventurous - sometimes to a fault, perhaps - but it's like Mia said last night - if it doesn't make you nervous to try something new, you're not doing it right.
The "cancer dance" was a good one. The "too cool for school - oh, another issue dance" crowd should go watch Dancing With The Stars.
That Door Dance last season was phenomenal. Even more phenomenal last season was Mia's routing that had Joshua panting "That was more than dance" afterwards - that was the one that had me weeping.
Oh, and is anybody else as in heat over choreographer Sonya T as I am? That woman is seeeeeeexxxxxyyyyyyy!!!!
12I really didn't like Ellen on the show. What's the point in having a "judge" who doesn't have a clue about dancing? I know she was just there for laughs, but I felt like it cheapened the whole thing.
As for the "cancer dance", I wouldn't have had any idea it was supposed to be about cancer if Melissa hadn't been wearing the scarf on her head and if Tyce hadn't explained it beforehand. I thought it was a bit gimmicky.
13Do you think the judges are less likely to criticize an "issue dance," though? All of the ones I can think of over the years have been performed really well, so maybe there's not much to criticize, but I would hate to be the couple who had to dance, say, the quickstep up against something like that. Is it unfair, or just the luck of the draw?
14Well Buzz, one would *think* that it's just the luck of the draw, BUT....(and tell me if I'm wrong here) did anyone else notice that they don't show what dances the couples "pick" out of the hat? I've only seen the dancers pick a partner. I'm sure parts of this show are probably rigged, so I definitely believe some couples have an unfair advantage.
15Tarabara, I remember seeing them pick the dance out of the hat during the part of the competition where the partners stay the same. Of course they claim it's all random, but who really knows?
And Buzz, yeah I think the "issue dances" get judged more easily. If one of the judges said anything remotely negative or even neutral about the dance last night while Mia and half the audience were bawling their eyes out, they would have looked like a jerk.
16Actually, during the earlier part of the season they did show the couples picking dances/choreographers out of a hat - I assume that they are still doing so and that they focused recently on them picking their partners out of the hat because that's what's new - but it may well be that a choregrapher would present different material to different couples.
Evan had a crack at Sonya's choreography last night and a different dancer would have put that over so that the judges would have been praising the piece to the sky, so I don't think that it's the case that only certain dancers get juicy material presented to them.
There's no getting around the fact that Ade and Melissa did that piece proud - or that Evan was not strong enough as a performer to make Sonya's piece stand out as it could have.
17Thanks Chouette and Steve! I guess I should have clarified- I remember them picking the dances prior to the top 10, but ever since then, they haven't shown it...which leaves me somewhat suspicious. Still, I do agree that despite all the over-the-top praising, I'm glad that it was Ade and Melissa who were able to perform that piece.
18While I see the point about "issue dances" possibly having an unfair advantage in a competition show like this, or being judging more lightly because of the sensitive subject matter, I think it's just an inevitable part of dance and choreography. Just like songwriters uses personal, emotional issues to write the best songs, choreographers use their own experiences to create dances - it's cathartic and an essential part of the artistic process. So while yes, it is essentially a dance competition, the show also serves the broader purpose of exposing the general public to the dance world and without these dramatic pieces, it would not accomplish that to the extent it does.
I also might be biased knowing the woman that was the inspiration for Tyce's piece last night. An incredible artist and choreographer herself, she more than deserves to have such a stunning dance dedicated to her and seen by such a huge audience. And perhaps the fact that she is part of the dance community might have also played into why the judges responses were so emotional.
Ok, off my soapbox!
19I thought I was the only one who the cancer dance was kind of a cheat, because well - who's going to say they didn't like it? I myself have had a few people close to me fight cancer, but I still thought the dance was just okay. There. I said it.
20I guess that's part of what's refreshing about Simon Cowell on American Idol. Like him or hate him, he's pretty blunt about what he thinks and the audience and other judges can be bawling and going on about how moved they were by a performance and he'll go, "I thought it was boring and maudlin" if that's the case.
Given Mia's rip on Brandon in the auditions, I suspect that she has an equally politically incorrect streak.
Do emotionally charged pieces have an advantage? I think it's a double-edged sword, because if they are done well, then, yeah, they are sure to draw praise - but if the judges can tell that the choreography had the potential to be great, but that the dancers failed it, then woe to the dancers that are in that position - and that has been seen on this show.
21regardless of the debate of the "issue" dances "this woman's work" is one of my favorite songs (the original, but maxwells is wonderful as well) so that made the dance wonderful for me....and the emotion (esp. when melissa was beating on ade's chest) could be felt through the screen.
my second fav. dance was jeanine and brandons second one..it wasn't that amazing, but stood out last night.
i loved jeanine's and melissas solos last night...very different, great songs.
22this show is also a contest, I read all the comments and am amazed. It is about luck of drawer for patnership and also routine. Sometimes dancers get extraordinary routine like the cancer, addiction, and they get saved by it. Please remember that its America voting so while not everyone in America choose to leave a comment, the results are what the majority wants. So sometimes some dancers become victims like Will of season 4 Danny of season 3 now Jannette. Its what makes the show so exciting and unpredictable. It also keeps the dancers on their feet
