So You Think You Can Dance Rundown: The Top 16

Hey Mickey! Toni Basil made her return to the judging panel for Wednesday's episode of So You Think You Can Dance, and I've got to ask: Do she and Mary Murphy hate each other? They were sitting so far apart at that judging table, you'd think they were Jon and Kate.

But moving on — this episode introduced our first new couple since the start of the season, as Kayla and Kupono joined forces after their partners were eliminated last week. And overall, this night was all about the backside, from Melissa's exposed back in her rumba outfit to Randi's hypnotizing tush to Phillip's ripped pants. Don't forget to vote for which dancers you think are in trouble, and to see my thoughts on the episode and add your own, just read more.

Karla and Jonathan — I think one of the cardinal sins of hip hop on this show is to dance without being together, and Karla and Jonathan weren't together at all. Karla was sharper than Jonathan, but the two together just gave the impression of not really hitting it hard enough. Nigel said it wasn't nearly good enough, Mary said Jonathan needs to show more than just tumbling, and Toni said it felt store-bought and not authentic.

Asuka and Vitolio — These two were our second couple of the night to fall seriously out of sync, but they still had a bunch of nice moments — and some serious personality from Vitolio, maybe for the first time. Even in the rocker outfit, Asuka still came off as a little cutesy and posed, but from the look of the video clips, that was a big leap from the start. Nigel loved it, but Mary picked on the synchronization and said it stopped short of amazing.

Melissa and Ade — This couple's first attempt at ballroom was a rumba, and they both looked super sexy from the first moment. There were a couple of spots where you could see them really working and thinking about what came next, but overall, it was smooth and, well, hot. Nigel couldn't stop talking about how sexy they both were, Mary said they sold the emotion, and Toni said Melissa's ballet training really showed through.

Janette and Brandon — Wow, these two non-hip-hoppers have some nastiness in them, don't they? Brandon in particular impressed me; he seemed to really take to the style, and I don't think I would have guessed it wasn't his thing. But Janette should get props for really getting into her rocker character, too. Nigel was surprised and impressed, Mary said they've been hitting it every week, and Toni said the routine was strategic and smart.

Kayla and Kupono — This new couple drew a waltz for their first routine together, and I was pretty worried for them at first; with some rare exceptions, the waltz just bores me. But this Viennese waltz was soft and flowy and pretty; it didn't blow me away, but it was certainly pleasant to watch. Nigel said it was nice but not the kind of routine that would make people stand up and cheer, Mary said it was endearing, and Toni said something or other about their lack of shoes.

Randi and Evan — One, Randi's "Unitard Girl" shirt cracked me up. Two, booty! I've given up on trying to understand what happens in Mia Michaels's brain, but I'm fairly certain these two pulled it off. This sultry little routine number reminded me of Chicago, and while I'm pretty sure it'll be a love it or hate it routine, I definitely loved it. Nigel said it was an odd idea pulled off perfectly, Mary said it marked Evan's debut as a leading man, and Toni said they lived up to the choreography.

Jason and Caitlin — Between the swirly lighting and Caitlin's crazy outfit, I had a little trouble actually focusing on their paso doble. From what I could tell, it was technically well danced, though I didn't necessarily pick up on the fire and anger between the two of them. Nigel wanted more performance, Mary thought it was a great performance but wanted them to watch their posture, and Toni thought it was powerful.

Jeanine and Phillip — Well, that gave a new meaning to the words "couch jumping." This was one of the most character-based routines of the season so far, and I caught myself smiling at my TV screen. Both showed a lot of personality, though Phillip could be more expressive in his face. Nigel wanted to see more from Phillip, Mary thought it was a joy to watch, and Toni suggested maybe their feather pillows upstaged them.

Best of the night — I absolutely adored Evan and Randi and "the butt routine," and Melissa and Ade's rumba and Brandon and Janette's hip hop weren't far behind. And while I understand the criticism of Jeanine and Phillip, it was still one of the more enjoyable numbers of the night for me.

In trouble — I'll be shocked if Karla and Jonathan aren't in the bottom. I'm not sure that Caitlin and Jason will be terribly memorable, and I think Asuka and Vitolio might find themselves back in the bottom three as well.
