Blue or Pink? A Sweet Sleeping Beauty Birthday Party

We've seen our fair share of princess parties inspired by Disney.

We've seen our fair share of princess parties inspired by Disney. (Remember this adorable Snow White soiree? And this Project Runway-meets-princess party?) But while Sleeping Beauty — aka Briar Rose, aka Princess Aurora — is one of our favorite classic Disney princesses, she hasn't popped up on the kid party circuit much . . . until now (though we're guessing she'll get more popular with next year's release of Maleficent)! Suzanne Olvey of Fanciful Events used the cursed princess as an inspiration for her daughter's lovely birthday party, full of rose-topped sweets, a cake fit for royalty, and an awesome design-your-own-tutu station. "I wanted to incorporate the famous pink vs. blue fight between the fairies," Suzanne says. "The party turned out really special and so magical." Keep clicking for all the princess-perfect details!

The Dark and Dirty History of Sleeping Beauty

It's time to wake up.

It's time to wake up. The story of Sleeping Beauty isn't the sweet fairy tale you might have thought it was. With its initial narrative as a disturbing Italian folktale and a history that includes an erotic novel series and Disney's most frightening villainess — who Angelina Jolie will play in 2014's Maleficent — happily ever after it isn't. Find out more about the intriguing and sometimes dark evolution of the Sleeping Beauty story over time.

Sleeping Beauty: The Original Fifty Shades Erotic Trilogy

Before E.L. James and her Fifty Shades of Grey made erotica for women so commonplace that soccer moms are reading about BDSM at the playground, there was another blush-worthy book trilogy — Anne Rice's Sleeping Beauty series — and it's having a comeback.

Before E.L. James and her Fifty Shades of Grey made erotica for women so commonplace that soccer moms are reading about BDSM at the playground, there was another blush-worthy book trilogy — Anne Rice's Sleeping Beauty series — and it's having a comeback. Originally published in the '80s under the pen name A. N. Roquelaure, the trilogy includes The Claiming of Sleeping Beauty, Beauty's Punishment, and Beauty's Release, and it's being rereleased Thursday with newly designed covers and a new preface from the author.

Thanks to the widespread popularity of Christian Grey, this sadomasochistic twist on the Sleeping Beauty fairy tale has reemerged from the back shelves, with sales in the first six months of 2012 already double what they were in all of 2011. And Anne Rice is proud enough of the trilogy to nix her pen name and prominently display her real name on the new covers. She's also thankful that the masses are finally accepting female sexuality and erotica. In her interview with The New York Times Anne said:

"In the '80s when these books were published, people really didn't want to talk about them. It was viewed as an outrageous thing to do. The gays were the only people speaking about sexual liberation. Women have just as much right to pornography as men do, and I'm talking about literary porn, erotica. If a woman wants to read about being overwhelmed by a pirate, that's her right."

So if you're on the hunt for more erotica books after finishing the Fifty Shades trilogy, you might want to check out this sexy Sleeping Beauty series!

Diane Kruger made a grand entrance today at the Cannes Film Festival premiere of Sleeping Beauty on the arm of her hot boyfriend, Joshua Jackson. Their stop in France is just the latest international destination for the pair after a visit to NYC for the Met Gala and a romantic trip to Turkey. Diane's no stranger to Cannes, where she famously premiered Inglourious Basterds with Brad Pitt and Quentin Tarantino in 2009. Brad will be back again this year to screen The Tree of Life, while Diane may be busy this evening promoting her turn as a model at a L'Oréal-sponsored party.
