Despite the fact that I've never owned shoes in the $500+ range and have never been a single and fabulous 30-something (or 40-something) New Yorker, I related to and loved the characters on Sex and the City. Every week I could count on seeing four women who placed a high value on their female friendships rather than tearing each other down (ahem, The Hills), who fought bravely against those who would look down on them for being unmarried, and who talked candidly about not just sex, but everything. Amidst hardship, lapses in judgment, and insecurities, they were smart ladies who had the understanding that life — even for the truly sophisticated — is no fairytale.

Some of these cherished characteristics translated well to the big screen version and I'm so thankful for that. But I'm also a bit mystified by how far it strays at times from the very aspects I loved so much. I wish I could say that it's a witty and modern take on the meaning of love and friendship for middle-aged women (and women approaching middle-age). Instead, the film is at times a fun fantasy, but it's not the Sex and the City I remember.
To see what I totally enjoyed about seeing these women back together and what struck a false note, read more.
The first third of the film has a lot of the good stuff from the series: it's irreverent, funny, absurd, intelligent, and full of sharp insights into marriage and being single in your 40s, all the while poking fun at its own universe. Then, slowly but surely, the movie veers into some strange territory and the women start taking themselves and their designer bags way too seriously, and everyone loses a normal dose of perspective.
Bravo to the writers for taking a risk with some genuinely dark moments (a necessity for a feature-length film, and this one is lengthy at over two hours) but even so (without giving away too many details, I promise you), nothing is so bad that any character should ever seriously utter the line, "Will I ever laugh again?" Even Miranda, who could always be counted on for some snappy, cynical retorts that zap her friends back to reality is morosely silent for most of the film. I really liked how strong Miranda was in the series, and in the movie it's like she isn't given enough words. It's so disappointing.

That said, you will probably laugh at some hilarious moments, and you might even cry. Your heart will likely race with the excitement of seeing all of these characters together again and will revel in the exhilarating fact that they're here, living their lives as if they'd never left us. But there are many moments where everything just feels forced and lackluster. Of course there's an emphasis on couture and living the high life in New York, which is sometimes glamorous but mostly just rings empty. We're not all "looking for labels and love," actually. We want to laugh, we want these ladies to give at least some kind of voice to our modern hopes and fears and we definitely do not want to be pandered to.
My bottom line: For each moment of applause and laughter at my screening, there was an equal amount of groaning and eye-rolling. It succeeds in that it's not a disaster and I'm glad I saw it. It fails in that it isn't really a movie, it's a season of SATC smooshed together, and compared to the other seasons, well, they've done a lot better.

Going to go see it tonight! Hopefully, I won't be let down, but I know it's a possibility! haha
1Interesting!
2Buzz, I agree on some points and disagree on others. I also don't want to give away too much of the plot line, but I think what happened was bad enough for the character to utter that line, given the entire series. Argh...I am trying not to give away too much for those who haven't seen it yet.
Anyway, overall, I thought it was satisfying, if somewhat predictable. I got what I wanted from most of the story lines. I feel like it was definitely more Carrie focused than the show was, but I see why they had to do it that way since it's a 2.25 hour movie, not an 18 episode season. (And I didn't mind that much because Carrie was also my favorite!) Also, on a side note, I sometimes forget that SJP really is a great actress!
3Well, I have to say...This is all kind of expected. I don't think any movie that comes from such a successful show will ever fully live up to expectations.
I'm just THRILLED to see my four favorite women on screen again, and whatever comes along with it. 8pm tonight cannot come fast enough. :dances:
4Great review Buzz!
5still won't watch it
6Saw it last night at midnight, and thought it was AMAZING. I'm sorry, Buzz, I am, but I have to disagree with you. I think what happens in the movie definately deserves the "Will I ever laugh again?" line.
It was indeed more Carrie-based, but right-fully so. A+.
I laughed, I cried, I brought my vintage Gucci bag. Definately looking forward to seeing it again!
7Somehow I had a feeling it wouldn't be as good as the show, but I'm still going to see it!
8Kirssythepirate I agree--I mean even if people don't feel that line is deserved how many of us have been overdramatic in our own lives--I know I have!
With that said, I feel like I knew too many of the major plot points from previews, interviews the girls had given, and probably some spoilers in magazines. But, it was what was in between those major plot points that really mattered--the interaction between the four of them. I thought the movie was laugh out loud funny most of the time, and so touching at points too.
Charlotte stole the show for me--she was the best in the film in general, and the best Charlotte has ever been. Buzz, I think the reason you felt Miranda was so quiet is because through half of the movie she is keeping something in--at least I felt that way. I'm not too happy for the way they ended things with Samantha, but my friends disagreed.
Another gripe--Jennifer Hudson! I love her as a singer, but I always thought she was a one note actress. To me her part could have been played more believably by a no-name. She just over-acted and kind of ruined that character for me!
Lastly, I have read a lot of reviews that say the girls are obsessed with labels or being materialistic I think the words Carrie says at the end kind of puts perspective on all of that--like we don't need labels (i.e. the dress she wore at the end, to the labels of single, married, etc). I think that's supposed to come full circle and show labels aren't that important.
Overall, I loved the movie--I don't think it was forced really--I didn't think it was perfect, but I loved seeing them again!
9Sorry that's so long, but I only know two people who saw it (the two I saw it with!) so I'm dying to talk about it! haha!
10Buzz, you hit the nail on the head with this review — the movie is worth seeing, but I think the writers had one too many cosmos when throwing together this uncharacteristically generic plot. Ah, well. At least the clothes were made for gawking.
11Ooooh, I can hardly wait until Sunday when I'm watching it with my friends!!!
12LOVED IT!!!!!! Saw the midnight showing and it was FANTASTIC! It stayed true to the characters and had great writing. It felt like a continuation of the series...which is hard to pull off in a two hour movie. It was great and did the show and characters justice. We also saw a lot of growing up and sould searching which was great.
I also have to disagree the line, "Will I ever laugh again?" was VERY MUCH SO appropriate. She had every right to say this and it was very understandable.
I give it an A+++, any Sex & The City fan will LOVE this! FANTASTIC.
13Happsmjc — I'm dying to talk about it, too! Trust me. I want to respond but I don't want to include spoilers here. So, I started a group if you want to discuss the movie without putting spoilers here.
14Check out the group here.
saw it last night too! really pleasantly surprised me. i'm totally satisfied.
15Great review, Buzz!
16I saw it last night at midnight and was very disappointed. It just didn't feel like Sex and the City. I thought it was quite cheesy as well, even considering some of the past melodrama in the series. Also, I felt like the movie didn't bring a fresh perspective on any of the characters and just rehased the same old stuff. That said, I did find some parts highly amusing, but I don't think it was worth seing the film just for a few jokes about Montezuma's Revenge. I wish I'd waited to rent the film instead.
17Great review Buzz! I loved every single second of it, but I am cheesy like that.
18I saw it last night at the midnight showing and loved it! But the reason why I loved it is because I am a die hard fan. As a movie that stands alone without 6 seasons of falling in love with the characters its an okay movie. I think there were too many pointless segments such as the Fashion Show. That was a waste of time given that there were already 50000 zillion fashion montages. I love the fashion and it is a crucial part of the Sex and the City Brand but I felt like in the tv show, the fashion spoke volumes without having to be blatantly pushed in our faces. I wish the movie concentrated more on developing the male characters and what pushed them to their actions. The serious issues in the movie gave us an unfair one-sided perspective on very complex subject matter. I applaud the television show for giving us more of a witty perspective, instead of offering only randomly placed one-liners.
And as for J.Hud... I loved her in dreamgirls!, but as far as being an oscar winning actress, that's a no go. Something about her character seemed forced. And I think the only reason they picked her was to seemingly not "neglect" minorities as critics often cited about the show. (Which I highly disagree with that criticism b/c the show is not about race relations, but about gender. I too would have preferred a no-namer with sincere acting chops...
But After saying all that I will go see it again.. and buy the DVD! The plot was exactly what I wanted if the some segments of the story were explored more.
Okay I hope I didn't give anything away!
19I agree 100% with this review. And I'm a mega fan! So, I'm glad they made it, I'm glad I saw it. I laughed, I cried. I just wanted a little more! That being said, I'm going again on Sunday!
20Ooh, I'm dying to talk about it buzz I have to check out your group!
21Come to the group and help me defend the movie, hotstuff!
22Ok, seriously? Do you know how hard it is for me not to wander over to that group? Eek! But I totally want to be somewhat surprised tonight.
23it was amazingggg! i saw it at 12:01a last night/this morning lol with 5 of my best girlfriends!
24Buzz you are an amazing reviewer!!
25Gah I staied up til 5 with my best friend. We went to see the movie and I am sooooo tired, but I can't stop talking and reading about this movie... Sucks I have to go to work. I probably need sleep sometime... haha but the group Buzz made brings up very good points about the movie and series as a whole... so def check it out!
26I was pretty happy/satisfied with how the series ended so I've been nervous about a movie version. I was reading a quick review in my local newspaper (the Boston Herald) and it gave major spoilers with NO warning. Now, I'm totally bummed because I know more than I would like before I see it! I really appreciate that your review does NOT give spoilers. Well done!
27PerfectScore,I agree with you on every tick. I saw it last night [midnight] here in Chicago. It was great fun being out in the middle of the night with 1000 other "die hard fans" [I saw it at a theater with 21 screens].
I enjoyed it for what it was "a cream puff thru a key hole" [I had to]! But mostly as with the series itself the movie was a lesson on what we as women can do and be for each other.
I laughed, I cried, I will see it several more times and buy the DVD!
Viva La Sex in the City the Movie Part Deux!
28This is my review, copy and pasted from my review on facebook:
SPOILER ALERT!!!!!
I saw an advance screening of this movie a couple nights ago and while I wasn't disappointed, I still think the series should have probably been left alone. The film is set 4 years after the series finale and not much has changed - Carrie and Big are STILL dating, Miranda and Steve live with their son Brady in Brooklyn, Charlotte and Harry have a 3 year old adopted Chinese daughter named Lily, and Samantha is living with Smith and manages his career in LA. Most of the girls' lives are completely shaken up over the course of the movie (which takes place over a whole year) and is stretched into a long 2+ hour film. I was pleased with the storylines of Charlotte and Samantha, because they stayed true to their characters but it is still evident that they have grown over the years. These two characters also had the best one-liners, while Cynthia Nixon and Sarah Jessica Parker handle the emotionally draining storylines. The opening sequence of the movie is fabulous, but the overall tone of the film wasn't as light as I thought it would be, and the silly moments seemed really strange for SatC (Charlotte actually poops her pants in one scene!). Although it was a pretty enjoyable movie, there were a few things that bothered me: 1.) Steve always seemed like one of the sweetest and most loyal guys, but he makes a horrible mistake in this film that sets in motion a terrible chain of events. (2.) I find it hard to believe that Carrie and Big haven't made any changes in their relationship over the past four years since the finale, after he finally declared she was "the one." If she was already thinking about the possibility of marriage and kids with Petrovsky, shouldn't have this come up sooner with someone that she has dated for over a decade, like Big? (3.) Although the movie's running time is long, it doesn't seem like much happens except that Carrie grieves and grieves and grieves (by the way, there are NO deaths in the film as it has been widely reported). Most of the story is fixated around Carrie, and the supporting characters like Stanford are only in a couple scenes. Basically, it was a mostly satifsying movie with a good conclusion, but only die-hard fans will probably like it.
29Sorry that my review is so long, it doesn't actually have many spoilers except what is already explained in the opening credits. I would have put my post into Buzz's group but I didn't see it until after I commented.
30SPOILER ALERT----I loved the movie, it was a perfect mix of the series with an actual movie. I also disagree with Buzz about the not laughing line. THis was her man, NOT SHOWING UP AT THE ALTER. SO typical Big. I wish she would end up with Aidan. hahaha
31I have to admit, I wasn't a diehard fan of the show to begin with, although I was an occasional happy viewer. As for the film, I'm gonna go with "disappointing". I will say only this:
1) I do not think poop jokes are funny. Sorry.
2) "Will I ever laugh again" was indeed overwrought (my mother died young and in my own home - and even that was not enough to make me even think that). But in all fairness, haven't we all at least FELT that way from time to time?
32Die hard fan! I was so happy just to be with my four fav TV girlfriends that I can let a few weaknesses in the movie fly. I thought the movie was a B+. There was enough fun and fashion for the die hard fans to dig, which was great. I thought they also showed the growth of the characters and their willingness to evolve a bit. The main elements of the story were not as light-hearted as the show, but it seemed appropriate.
33I appreciate your reviews heaps Buzz, but I still can't wait to see it! Just watched the taped Oprah interview on it, and it looks like so much fun.
34Personally I thought the movie was all Eye Candy. Any woman or man that goes in to watch this movie and learn a lesson is a dummy. It's Sex & The City. I have to say I was very pleased with my favorite character Samantha . I felt she shared her screen time right in the middle with Carrie. Samantha had some pretty amazing and funny scenes and I think she sent the best message in the movie. Obviously it will be looked past because everyone will focus on the obvious but I love the fact that she said " I have to love myself", which I felt some of the character could use themselves.
35How is that possible that Carrie says that labels are not important? So this movie shoves labels in our faces for 2 1/2 hours and then tells us that they are no big deal. Please.
36I haven't seen it yet but I can't wait!
But this is coming from someone who bought the box set twice when an old friend stole my 1st one.
I haven't heard too many people rave about it but I will still watch and draw my own conclusion. I love hearing what people think about movies, bad and good. None of the negative or good will affect how I go into it.
37I LOVED it - I teared up a few times, laughed out loud - it's a movie, fantasy, but bottom line, they talk about stuff most girls do with their friends but the character personalities are a little more over exaggerated than real life. I could relate to almost every situation....great movie - and you didn't have to watch the series to enjoy it. Heck, I might even see it again.
38Just like everyone else mentioned - great review!!! I think we all knew that it wouldn't be as amazing as we hoped, but i think we're all just so happy to see our girls again. Even though the movie was 2+ hours, I just wish things went a bit deeper. Things just kept happening and I mean, since we've all seen the show, we can assume the depth because we know the characters and the story behind it, but still..I wish there was a little bit more development.
I just wanted to vent...lol, i went to the midnight showing and my friends and i got all dressed up. Not overly dressed, but you know, dressed like the girls...and we were the only ones in both showings that were dressed up!! People were giving us the up-down dirty looks. I was completely insulted - what kind of die hard fan attends the premiere midnight showing of SATC the movie in jeans and a tshirt? Or worse, be all judgmental of the girls that do? I was shocked too because I saw the movie in Orange County in California. SO confused! haha
39thetoneishopeful, oh man in the Atlanta Midnight Showing EVERYONE Was Dressed up! I wouldn't be surprised if a few ppl snuck in some cosmos! haha Such a Fun time!
40I am a die hard fan that stumbled upon the show in it's first seasons and held viewing parties that culiminated with cosmos and the last episode. I didn't respect Aidan for coming back, was thrilled that she ditched the russian and cheered when "Big" came to Paris. I admit that I cringed when I saw that "Big's" real name is John. All of that said . . . I loved this film!
I was very scared that the movie would never live up to the hype. I avoided any references to the movie and heard a couple things from shows that did not prompt with "Spoiler Alert." I recommend that you go with your girlfriends and get drinks afterwards. I heart Michael Patrick King.
41I have to say, I don't agree. I would definitely utter the lines "Will I ever laugh again?" under those circumstances, and I also found Miranda's snark-free dialogue refreshing. Sarcasm is cool in your twenties and thirties, but by forties and fifties it just seems bitter. I like that she's mellowed out and that the women are less superficial and more soul-searching. I thought it had everything: travel, glamour, very realistic love and of course, amazing friendship. I could have definitely lived without the lame key chain story line but everything else was perfection.
42Please someone send me an email of what really happened. i am a big fan but want to wait till the dvd comes out. Can't wait
43This was my favorites show of all time and I in no way exagerate that. I bought all of the seasons on DVD right when they came out and they have been watched many a time. I went in with low expectations because I figured it wasn't really a show that could translate to the screen well, but I saw it yesterday afternoon and LOVED it. I definately got teary eyed on multiple occassions. I actually think the movie was more true to the personalities that I had come to expect from the characters than the series finale. Go see it, if you loved the show you will not be disappointed. The middle gets a little too much (sorry Jennifer Hudson but you are not one of the 4), but it definately didn't ruin the movie.
44I heard they are going to do a Sex & the City part 2 in two years!!! Don't know how true it is yet though...but I'm sure they will because they are going to make TONS of money with this one!
45I completely agree! Great review! What happened to the Miranda character that I loved so much? It seemed to miss something... I wanted to see more of the fun and NYC! They needed less sad stuff and more of the end fun! I enjoyed it but season 6 left my expectations super high!
46I think your review is crazy!!!!I am a die hard fan of SATC and it delivered all it promised and more!!!!! The series always had it's finger on the pulse of what was going on and it did here in the movie too! Perhaps you are one of the twentysomethings who can't relate?????? Then I suggest you go back to the first season on DVD and reschool yourself on SATC!!!!!!!!! I'm Samantha's age and I totally felt this movie was completely in step with the progression of time since the series ended. Did you really believe they would remain as they were back then?????? If so then you know nothing of Michael Patrick King's writing style and vision of this show!!
47ALL SATC FANS!!!!!! GO SEE THIS MOVIE!!!! YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED!!!!! RUN DO NOT WALK TO THIS MOVIE!!!!!
I saw it last night and well I thought it was great! I thought it really delivered. There was fashion, humour, tears, everything! Buzz said that it wasn't like the series, but I feel like there was no way it could be like the series. In fact, I don't think I would have been happy if it was like the series. These woman are older and you can feel that they've grown. As for the comment about Miranda being different, without giving too much away, I don't agree. She held on to her usual strong self for most of the movie, she didn't back down until she realized it was absolutely necessary. Which is so Miranda! Anyway, I am a die hard SATC fan and I absolutely love love loved it! Hope the rest of you love it to!
48saw it- loved it- it did it for me- i was satisfied!!!
49I really enjoyed it (and expected not to) Honestly my biggest concern is that they'll make another. Things are tied up nicely enough that ripping them back open for the sake of movie money seems unfair to the fans.
