The holiday season is still months away, but good news: I just found the perfect film to see with your family this Christmas. It's Saving Mr. Banks, Disney's drama about how Walt Disney (Tom Hanks) had to work to get Mary Poppins made into a movie in 1961. His biggest obstacle is winning over the novel's uptight author, P.L. Travers (Emma Thompson), whose intimate connection to her work makes it difficult for her to give up creative control.
This movie is perfectly cast: Hanks is delightful as charismatic Walt, and Thompson is a great foil as the overly conservative novelist that Walt needs to get through to. Jason Schwartzman and B.J. Novak also had me cracking up as the film's musical composers, with whom P.L. instantly clashes. But the best part of the trailer is that it's so Disney: you can just feel the magic that's baked right in. (And yes, there is a trip to Disneyland involved.) The film hits theaters Dec. 25, but check out the trailer when you read more.
