What to Rent: New DVD Tuesday

Looking for something to watch on the couch this weekend?

Looking for something to watch on the couch this weekend? I've got a few DVD releases for your consideration, including a Hollywood retelling of a classic story, a quirky festival film, and a hilarious TV show to get into, if you haven't already. Take a look!

Robin Hood
Director Ridley Scott helms this prequel of Robin Hood with Russell Crowe in the title role and Cate Blanchett as a tougher version of Maid Marian. Crowe isn't my favorite actor to ever play the part, but mainly my biggest issue with the film was its long run time at two and a half hours (hey, at least at home you can pause it). The director's cut includes an extra seventeen minutes of footage, but in this case, it may actually be a good thing, as it shows more of the relationship between the two leads.

Ondine
Colin Farrell plays a handsome, former boozer who finds a woman in his net while fishing and questions if she's actually a water creature from Scottish mythology. I know it sounds a little out there, but I actually enjoyed it when it debuted at the Tribeca Film Festival. Farrell is a perfect fit in the role, and he has nice chemistry with his leading lady/now-girlfriend, Alicja Bachleda. DVD extras include a behind-the-scenes featurette.

Box Office: Sex and the City Is No Match for Shrek

UPDATE: According to estimates through the holiday, Prince of Persia actually bested Sex and the City 2, taking in $37.8 and $37.1 million, respectively.

Forget Sex and the City 2 versus Prince of Persia. Despite the hype surrounding both of those films, this Memorial Day weekend belonged to Shrek Forever After. All together now: Huh?!

The family film continued its hold on the top spot at the box office for a second week with $43.3 million. That leaves Sex and the City 2 in second place with $32.2 million (a number that fell short of insiders' estimates); Jake Gyllenhaal's Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time came in third with $30.1 million. Something to keep in mind, however: SATC opened on Wednesday at midnight, which means if they had counted Thursday's sales as part of the weekend total, the ladies may just have been able to eke out a first place finish.

Iron Man 2 took fourth with $16 million and Robin Hood rounded out the top five with $10.3 million.

Box Office: Shrek Lumbers to the Top of the Chart

It was a fairy-tale weekend for Shrek Forever After, which earned the number one spot at the box office in its opening weekend with an impressive $71.2 million.

It was a fairy-tale weekend for Shrek Forever After, which earned the number one spot at the box office in its opening weekend with an impressive $71.2 million. Following in the monster's footsteps was Iron Man 2, which pulled in $26.6 million, then Robin Hood in the third spot with $18.7 million.

Romantic drama Letters to Juliet secured the number four title with $9.1 million, with Queen Latifah's rom-com Just Wright completing the top five with $4.2 million.

Unfortunately, new release MacGruber missed the top five and came in at six — maybe audiences listened to the poor reviews.

Take a Fitness Lesson From Maid Marion

If you've seen Ridley Scott's Robin Hood, then you already know that Cate Blanchett is not your typical Maid Marion.
Fitness Lessons From Cate Blanchett's Maid Marion in Robin Hood

If you've seen Ridley Scott's Robin Hood, then you already know that Cate Blanchett is not your typical Maid Marion. Cate's portrayal is more "kick ass and take names later" than that of a damsel in distress. She's also majorly inspiring on the fitness front. Check out which of Marion's medieval activities I'll be incorporating into my modern day lifestyle for some major calorie burning.
