Among my favorite Oscar moments was Hugh Jackman's opening number, in which he took a recession-inspired look at the year's five Best Picture nominees. I had a feeling things were going to go well when I saw the Slumdog Millionaire set with pizza boxes for TV monitors, but it got better with Hugh posing in the wooden Benjamin Button cutouts and hit its high point with "I haven't seen The Reader!"

It was great live, but it's only in pictures that I've really noticed all the funny details. I would say that Milk lost out by only getting Hugh on a soapbox — but that soapbox went for $20,000 at Elton John's Oscar party, so it's not all bad. Check out all the photos here!

I laughed hysterically at this opening, and I usually fast forward right through them, so right on Hugh!
1I couldn't stop laughing during the whole thing - the "made in the garage" sets were fantastic and honestly it was possibly the best opening yet.
2i loved it. honestly, he was the BEST choice to have as a host and i was pleasantly surprised with his performance. i hope that he gets acclaim for a job well done and that we get to see more of the sexiest man alive.
3this was HILARIOUS. i love Hugh Jackman- the tribute to musicals was very funny as well.
4I LOVED the opening with Hugh! And what made it really enjoyable was it truly looked like he was enjoying himself. Sometimes the presenters look like they'd rather be anywhere else but there, but Hugh got all into it. Loved it, hope he presents more often.
The part that he me laughing the hardest was The Reader haha.
5The opening was great! I was so impressed with him as the host.
6I just watched it online, it was hilarious! Hugh Jackman did a great job! And who knew he could sing?!
7Hugh Jackman did do a great job! so funny. (I only watched it on youtube didn't watch the awards). Hugh's done musicals in the past, but who knew Anne Hathaway could sing? they did a great job with this opening!
8I love Hugh and knew he would do a great job, he already had experience with hosting the Tony awards several times.
9This was fabulous! He did a fantastic job- great entertainer. Hope they made lots of money for charity from these items
10Hugh did do a great job. It was totally unexpected and we were cracking up. I loved the Reader part. And the best part was when he shouted "i'm WOLVERINE" at the end.
11I loved it, too! (And I thought the same thing about Hathaway, Kim!)
12I loved it! And it gave me a new appreciation for Hathaway.
13Hathaway was in the kiddie-friendly film Ella Enchanted where she sings quite a few numbers (if anyone's interested) - also, Hugh was hot/ amazing/ so talented, I could go on but we'd be here all night....
14anne hathaway was pretty great when she hosted SNL too - making fun of herself and then doing a skit as mary poppins and she surprised me then when she didn't sound like sh*t doing julie andrews! she's a pretty powerful performer in everything it seems... if you can find any of her skits on nbc.com they are pretty good!
