Oscar Nominee: The Illusionist for Cinematography

Every week up until the Oscars, I'll be featuring the nominees in the various visual categories, starting this week with cinematography. Yesterday, I had a gallery of stills from Children of Men, and today's nominee is The Illusionist.

This Neil Burger-directed film—starring Edward Norton and Jessica Biel—isn't a masterpiece, but its visual mastery is entirely deserving of an Oscar nod, if not a win. Set in turn-of-the-century Vienna, this intrigue-filled tale of a magician and his mistress excels thanks to the work of cinematographer Dick Pope.
