Oscar Nominee: The Black Dahlia for Cinematography

Every week up until the Oscars, I'll be featuring the nominees in the various visual categories, starting this week with cinematography. Yesterday, I had a gallery of stills from The Illusionist, and today's nominee is The Black Dahlia.

While The Black Dahlia was critically panned as a bit of a snooze-fest, director Brian DePalma clearly got something right in creating a classic film-noir atmosphere. The clean-cut cast members — including Josh Hartnett, Hilary Swank, Scarlett Johansson and Aaron Eckhart — appear polished and glamorous. If you look at the images without hearing the actors talk or try to act, the effect is beautiful and evocative. You can probably skip the movie itself, but you shouldn't miss the stunning stills from this highly stylized film. To see the gallery, read more
