It was probably only a matter of time before Oprah Winfrey staked out a TV network of her very own, but now it's official: Oprah will launch her own cable channel, OWN, in mid-2009. She issued a statement saying:
Fifteen years ago, I wrote in my journal that one day I would create a television network, as I
always felt my show was just the beginning of what the future could hold. For me, the launch of The Oprah Winfrey Network is the evolution of the work I’ve been doing on television all these years and a natural extension of my show.
The channel will be part of Discovery's cable networks (which also include TLC and the Travel Channel) and will take over for the current Discovery Health network. It won't carry Oprah's talk show, at least at the start, because rights to new and repeat broadcasts are already spoken for through 2011. But the Associated Press reports that some of Oprah's regular contributors could find a home on OWN. Paging Dr. Phil!
Discovery says OWN — a pretty great acronym, if you ask me — will have the same mission statement as the rest of Oprah's ventures: inspiring people to live their best lives. So, do you think Oprah TV would be something you'd want to watch? Or is it all just a little too much?

Wait - So no more Discovery Health Channel?
I'm really not that interested.
1I like oprah alot, and I think shes cool with this n that. but does she really need her own network? I don't think so...
2Um...I thought the Oxygen Network was Oprah's.
3RCL — I know! Apparently, she's given them money, and she appears on the air, but she doesn't have anything to do with their programming. OWN will be all hers to do whatever she wants to do with.
ASLW — Yup, no more Discovery Health as of mid-2009.
4Is anyone else starting to tire of all Oprah, all the time?
5Glad Ellen is challenging the O
Harpo was clever for a production company.
OWN is too arrogant.
6BS. i love discovery health. oprah annoys me
7She's a smart businesswoman, but all Oprah all the time...just not sure about that.
8I'm tired of Oprah.I can't even it through an hour of her show so I know I won't be watching her network.
9Are you f*cking kidding me?!?!!? I CANNOT STAND THIS WOMAN!!! Ugh... and replacing an interesting network like Discovery Health with her?! Outrageous. Plus, seriously... who names their network OWN?! Get over yourself Oprah... Looks like I won't be watching...
10I LOVE Lady O!!!! Don't hate.
11I'm tired of her, I don't watch her show any more or buy the magazine. I don't like the fact that America has made her into a God and she's happy to take on that role.
12what has this woman not done?? she has her talk show, satelite radio, magazine and now this. she's going over the top.
p.s our school was on oprah once.
13I think its a fabulous idea. She works with Dr Oz a lot so i can see where a lot of the programs go hand in hand.
14Interesting. I thought Oxygen was always publicized as her channel. I don't know that it was ever made clear that it wasn't hers...interesting marketing scheme.
15Pff, y'all crazy. I love Oprah.
16Why are most of you soooo angry about her OWNing a network? Would you be as angry if it were someone else or a man? I love the Discovery Health Channel, my hope is that most of the programmings will remain on OWN or will be given a new home. I wish Oprah the best.
17Love Oprah! I think this will be great. She'll probably have health, beauty, spiritual, and fitness shows on OWN. I doubt it will be Oprah in your face.
18a TV channel...what's next - is she going to run for president?
19Oooh, Oprah for President! Yes!
20Good for her, getting her own network. I'll have to wait & see. I like some parts of her XM channel (Dr. Oz, Dr. Smith, & Dr. Angelou), so I'll give it a shot.
21good bye discovery health?
22hello oprah!?
that's depressing!
i love discovery health and i'm not interested in oprah tv
It wont be Oprah on every hour! Please, she will just get to decide what shows will air on this network. I think it's great.
23I like Oprah. She's a remarkable woman. I don't usually watch her show (I'm not really into talk shows, but I respect her), but if she has interesting programming on her network; I'll watch it. I just hope that she doesn't deep six all the programming from Discovery Health, because some of it is really good.
24I love Oprah and I hope she succeeds in everything she does because she's so inspirational. With that said, an entire Oprah network does seem to be overkill. Oxygen already has Oprah After The Show, correct? What would the programming consist of-- rotations of Oprah and Dr.Phil episodes? I don't think that the Discovery Health channel should be eliminated either. I'm sure they have a loyal following, although I can't say I'm one of them as I do not have all those extra cable channels. The OWN ancronym is very clever though. Hopefully it will all work out.
25i dont really care if she has a network, but i do care that the discovery health channel is going to be gone!
