I've been patiently waiting for a glimpse of the movie adaptation of One Day ever since I read the last page of David Nicholls's novel last year. The story chronicles the friendship of Emma (Anne Hathaway) and Dexter (Jim Sturgess) over 20 years by visiting where they are in their lives on the same day each year. Though we're only privy to a cross section, it's enough to see how the relationship between them changes as they experience the realistic twists and turns of growing up.
I was always behind the casting of Sturgess as cocky, charming Dex, but I was a little more concerned about Hathaway as quiet, brainy Emma (mostly because she's American) — and as the trailer proves, her accent is a bit distracting. I'm also a bit disappointed that the preview gives away a lot of the novel's plot, complete with a more sappy veneer. Still, the film has potential, and maybe it's best not to judge it by this preview. Have a look for yourself when you read more.
