Olly Murs grew up dreaming of soccer stardom, but after an injury left him unable to play, he found a new passion in singing. After a less-than-serious start belting out karaoke in local pubs, he made it to the final two on UK's The X Factor in 2010. Olly's first two CDs have already been a success in the UK, and his latest album, Right Place, Right Time is now available in the US.
We caught up with Olly in LA during his recent tour with One Direction. He chatted with us about the "cheeky" tone of his new CD, his role as de facto big brother to the One Direction boys, and why he's still on the search for the right girl. He also performed an exclusive, stripped-down version of his single, "Heart Skips a Beat."
Should we introduce it at all or do you just want to go straight in? You make my heart skip, skip, skip, skip, skip, skip a beat. If you like that song, check it out and I'll be calling. And I I can't see. You're not yourself. Hey, everyone. I'm Lindsey from PopSugar and I'm here today with Olly Murs. How are you? I'm very well thank you, how are you? I'm very well. So your album is coming out in September in the States. Yes. And it's called "In Case You Didn't Know". So, where did that title come from? Olly Murs was the first album. The second album, I wanted to do something a little bit more cheekier. So for anyone out there, in case you didn't know, I'm Olly Murs kind of thing There you go. There was actually a song I wrote which was called "In Case You Didn't Know". I just kind of like the there was kind of a cheekiness to it, kind of like a quirkiness to it. Yeah. Well, I know for people at home that maybe aren't too familiar with you yet, you didn't set out to be singer necessarily, right? No, I wanted to be a soccer player, so I played a lot of football when I was growing up. It was my dream, you know, to be a soccer player. Unfortunately, I got an ACL injury on my left leg, a really bad injury at the age of about 22. And then I decided to get into music and applied for the X Factor and here I am. So, put another record on and play it on repeat. 'Cause nothing really matters when we're dancing. Well I heard before you went on X Factor, you actually did a lot of your practicing in local pubs. Is that right? One that just have a few glasses of wine or drinks in the bar and I sort of karaoke and I just said to the guy like, "Does it work?" He said, "Yeah." So I just started singing and entertaining everyone and it was just ended up being like a little show on a Sunday night. Well, now you're touring with One Direction a little bit. Yeah. So what's that been like? It's been great. I mean, you know, like I say, it's been a crazy couple of years. And then to sort of Then comes America. I didn't expect to come over here and be a part of this. And lucky enough just as it comes inside of me signing. One Direction were doing a world tour here. Right. World tour, kind of an American tour in a month's time. Would you be interested in jumping on that? I was like, "Yeah." Of course. I didn't expect anyone to know who I was. But, like, the One Direction fans, as you can hear, were outside the hotel. Yeah, exactly. They're like they know all my words, my songs like they really getting involved in my music and supporting me and giving me a lot of love, which is nice really. Yes. Break it down. Oh no. Oh no. What's you're doing to me. Oh no. Oh no. You're making it hard to resist. What's cool too is that your a little bit more mature than the One Directions guys. What are you trying to say? A couple years older. I am mature, yeah. Are you kind of like the older brother Probably yeah, I think I probably definitely am. I see a lot of me in the boys when I was their age. Yeah. 18, 19. Yeah, I definitely feel out I had the preference to it, I must say. Well, I know you said one of your favorite songs was "I Need You Now" Yes. Which is kind of about looking for love. So have you had any further luck on that front? No, I haven't. No. Typically I write a song about it hoping that the girls would listen to it. The last track on the album was just this ballad of me just pouring my heart out about me trying to find the right girl. Yeah. So, if you like that song check it out. Exactly . Maybe all the girls will call. Will call. I mean won't call me. So I know fans in the States have to wait until September 25th for the album. Yes. But I hear you're going to give us a little preview right now. Well, we're going to completely change the style of "Heart Skips a Beat." We're going to do it acoustically for you with the band. So, yeah, we're going to do the song different. So check it out. Awesome. Take it away. You make my heart skip Skip, skip, skip, skip skip a beat. And I can't see. You're not yourself. Even when you're here with me I know that you're somewhere else. Come on, come on. So put another record on, kiss, and lead me off. 'Cause nothing really matters when we're dancing. And listen to the same sad song playing on repeat. Every time we come this close, my heart skip, skips a beat. So come on spin me around. Now I don't wanna go home 'cause when you hold me like this that's when my heart skips, skips a beat. I know I should but I can't leave it alone and when you hold me like this, that's when my heart skip, skips a beat. Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh. Hey, come on. And so, hung up and we can let go. If you really have to leave, one more time just do me slow. Come on, come on. So put another record on. I play it on repeat. 'Cause nothing really matters when we're dancing. That's all that you ever need to know what you do to me. Everytime we come this close, my heart skips, skips a beat. So come on, spin me around. Now I don't wanna go home 'cause when you hold me like this, that's when my heart skip, skips a beat. I know I should but I can't leave it alone. And when you hold me like this, that's when my heart skip, skips a beat. Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh. Yeah, break it, break it down. And hold on, hold on. What you doing to me? Hold on, hold on. You make it hard to resist. Hold on, hold on. Now it's already too late. Hold on, hold on. 'Cause you make my heart skip, skip, skip, skip skip, skip a beat. So come on, spin me around. Now I don't wanna go home 'cause when you hold me like this that's when my heart skip, skips a beat. I know I should but I can't leave it alone. And when you hold me like this, that's when my heart skip, skips a beat. Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh. My heart skips, skips a beat. Oh,oh, oh, oh, oh. My heart skips a beat.
