New Harry Potter Book Cover Breathlessly Revealed

Let the rampant plot speculation begin! As reported by the AP, U.S. publisher Scholastic Inc. today revealed the cover of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the seventh and last book in the Harry Potter series. According to the word picture painted by the AP, the cover features "a dramatic gold-and-orange sky and a teenage boy in eyeglasses reaching upward."

The book, which will be released to clamoring mobs on July 21, has Harry looking a bit disheveled and gaunt, if I do say so myself. To be sure, that's quite purposeful:

"The structures around Harry show evident destruction and in the shadows behind him, we see outlines of other people," David Saylor, Scholastic's art director, said in a statement.

What do you guys think about the new cover? It looks a bit lackluster to me, but I'd be interested in hearing what clues you think it imparts about what's inside.

Oh my God, I think I just peed a little bit. Although, you're right, seeing it is a bit anticlimactic. Kind of blah.

Check out the full cover spread, he-who-must-not-be-named is in the left corner and the ground is all torn up...

i saw the full wrap-around cover on the news this morning, and it is much more exciting than this picture shows.
I love that outstretched hand...it makes me wonder already what the scene is about!

Ah! It's that time again for my Harry Potter obsession to return in full swing. As far as plot speculation the british covers seem to give more clues.

I'm gonna sound like a super nerd here...but if I am remembering correctly the handwritting in Tom Riddles diary from Chamber of Secrets might look like the writing of "and the Deathly Hallows". I wonder if that is supposed to mean something. It may not be the same though, I will look tonight.

I am so excited! When I saw this on Mugglenet this morning I flipped the heck out. The front cover isn't anything but the full cover! Voldy there Both of them not having wands Harry has something around his neck (locket perhaps?) They are in "battle" but not looking at/facing each other The rocks underneath them The surroundings: Can anyone say hercules? How about the shadows? Does the curtains mean they are behind the veil?!? The Uk Adult and Children ones are very interesting as well. The Adult being the locket with a big green S The Children one having SOOOoo much going on! The back cover is hogwarts (I believe) meaning they ARE going back? The inside covers: one has the stag and the other has an orb with a curled up snack in it! The front cover has Hermione, Harry (duh), and what looks like Ron but doesn't have as red hair as I remember. Anyways, they are sort of laying in gold, jewels, and other things and being sucked (as it appears to me anyways with Ron's foot flying in the air and Hermione and his hair flying the way it is). Also do you see that someone is holding on to a sword... Look closely and you see DOBBY! (I hope it's Dobby anyways) *sigh* That is all I've got so far.

Pinkrabbit are you talking about a secret cover to be released or something??? There is nothing on the front, I am definetly disappointed and not appeased by a "golden sky". :( I love Harry Potter.

PinkRabbit is talking about the Bloomsbury edition of the book.

Thanks for the Mugglenet tip, PinkRabbit. The UK Children's cover seems the most immediately striking to me, as it shows a battle weary trio (with Dobby clinging to Harry and a sword) running/falling out of some gold vault (Gringotts?), but the US version is also interesting. When I looked at the full cover, I wondered if there was any significance to the curtain thingy that frames the picture... perhaps it is the veil (the one Sirius went through in the dept. of mysteries)?

They're obviously not going to give too much away with a cover, but I'm so excited for the book to come out!

it looks AMAZING!
I'm lining up at midnight no matter what the cover looks like.

LOL at Whip...I think I had a remarkably similar reaction. I freaking scheduled myself out of work for three days after the book comes out. AAAAAAAAHHHHH I can't wait!
The cover up there doesn't look too exciting, but these other covers you're all talking about sound more interesting.
I totally preordered 2 copies so that my hubbie and I won't fight over who gets to read it first! Yea!! So excited.

I don't get it... it's way too bright to relate to anything having to do with "deathly shallows". Not enough symbolism on this! It could have been better. -Katie

Ah-ha.... if you click on the link above it takes you to a page where you can see a "slideshow" of images & all of them. (I missed this the first time). The "full cover" is just the front + back opened up. There is more to it as others have said. -Katie
i cannot wait!! although when it comes out i will nothing left to live for... ::sigh::

Does anyone else thinks the curtains etc. might have something to do with Sirius's death?!?! She never fully explained it and usually she does so I think it may have something to do with that!

Oh, and the locket on his neck has to be a horcrux! Possibly he is wearing it to protect himself against something? Or maybe bind him to someone (i.e. Voldemort!)
The bloomsbury cover looks more interesting. http://www.thestar.com/artsentertainment/article/197324

I'm worried that after I read this book that I'm going to suffer from Post Potter Depression. I mean, has anyone thought about starting a group?! ;)

Now that I've realized that it's on all three book covers, I'm going to go out on a limb and say that the locket is the locket horcrux that Dumbledore was trying to find at the end of Book 6 and that we all know is actually at Grimmauld Place since RAB is Regulus Black. My guess is that's the only way the artists could incorporate the horcruxes into the cover without giving away plot points. And I'm way intrigued by Harry's sword on the Bloomsbury cover.
