Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones are back as the Men in Black when the third installment of the franchise hits theaters this weekend. This time around, Smith's character, Agent J, has to go back in time to rescue his partner (Josh Brolin plays the young Agent K). So does the film live up to the original, or is this just another unnecessary sequel? We'll tell you if the movie is a watch, pass, or rent.
Hi, I'm Becky Kirsch and in Watch, Pass or Rent we're looking at Men in Black 3. Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones are back as alien-fighting agents J and K. When a villainous alien goes back in time to kill Agent K, Agent J must head to the '60s to save his partner's life. I'm an agent of Men in Black, but I'm from the future, we're partners. Okay Future Man, where to? First of all, I'm gonna need my gun. No, no, no, space gun. I think most of us collectively scratched our heads when it was announced that a new Men in Black movie was coming out 15 years after the original, but Men in Black 3 is surprisingly fun and fresh, and it really reminded me of how much I love Will Smith. Is there anybody here who's not an alien? Can we have a minute? Sure. K, are you trying to blow my cover? Whoa, Andy Warhol's one of us? Who's the dumbass? Whoa! Will Smith hasn't been in a movie since 2008, so seeing him in this is like reuniting with an old friend. Plus, he hasn't aged a especially when he's standing next to Tommy Lee Jones. But to that point, when he goes back in time we've Josh Brolin playing a younger version of Tommy Lee Jones' character, and it's so funny seeing him do his impressions. And he and Will Smith just have great banter with each other. How old are you? 29. You have some city miles on you. I'm starting to under stand why we don't talk. This movie was stuck in development for a while, so I was a little bit worried about how the script would turn out. But I was impressed that it's actually really fast paced and smart, with time movies sometimes there's too much going on, but this film kind of pokes fun at the genre, but also ties up all the loose ends and doesn't leave you with your brain hurting too much. I'm from the future we're partners. Twenty-five years from now you're going to recruit me. Fourteen years after that the guy you didn't let me kill today at Coney Island, he escapes from prison and jumps back in the past and I unleashes a full scale invasion of Earth. We've got about 19 hours to catch him to kill him, so really, we need to go right now. This movie really benefits from being in 3D. The concept is already cartoon-y, but you've got the aliens and the time travel thrill ride, so the 3D really helps it come to life. It also helps with the villainous alien who's played by Jemaine Clement from Flight of the Conchords. It's hard to find a better summer popcorn flick than Men in Black 3. The guys have such a great, funny rapport, and it's the best kind of sequel because it reminds you of why the original was such a hit. I give it a Watch.
