In 2012, aka the year of Channing Tatum, America was introduced to a phenomenon that has forever changed us: Magic Mike. The male stripper film based on Tatum's own experiences spawned a sequel, and not only is the next installment definitely on, but we have a title (Magic Mike XXL), a release date, and now a little bit more info — even if some of it is kind of a bummer.
Where It Will be Set
Channing Tatum told GQ that the sequel will be set at a stripper convention, based again on his own experiences from his stripping days. Cast member Gabriel Iglesias also said he's heard that "they're taking the show on the road."
When It Comes Out
Magic Mike XXL will come out in the Summer, like the first movie did: it's set for release July 3, 2015. Start making your Fourth of July plans now!
Gregory Jacobs will reportedly direct the sequel, taking over for original director Steven Soderbergh. Jacobs was not only the assistant director on Magic Mike, he has also been Soderbergh's longtime AD on most of his films.
Who's In and Who's Out
We know Tatum, Matt Bomer, and Joe Manganiello will all return for the sequel, but not everyone may come back. Fellow returning cast member Gabriel Iglesias tempered our excitement when he said that Matthew McConaughey might not be involved. In the radio interview you can watch here, Iglesias said, "Word has it that Matthew's probably not going to be involved with this one." Let's all hang our thongs at half mast.
