Pilot Scoop: Looking

Given the wild success of Girls, it's no surprise that HBO is coming out with another show about finding love and surviving your 20s — and in this case, your 30s and 40s too. Looking, starring Glee's Jonathan Groff, is a new drama about gay men trying to figure out their lives in San Francisco. Looking premieres Sunday, so keep reading to get more details on the pilot and to find out whether you should watch.

HBO
  • What it's about: Patrick (Groff) is a single, 29-year-old programmer living in San Francisco and figuring things out with the help of his friends Agustín (Frankie J. Alvarez) and Dom (Murray Bartlett). The three of them are struggling to find love and meaning in the world of modern dating, which is now riddled with Instagram filters, OKCupid profiles, open relationships, and muddled signals.
  • Where it works: The scenes and dialogue are impeccably written. Groff shines in his role as Patrick, and the show contains tons of relevant and relatable dating situations that will resonate with anyone trying to make a connection in a big city.
  • Where it doesn't: While I appreciate that the show takes care in setting up the action of the series, the pilot is a little slow moving. The characters are accessible and well crafted, but there's not a lot of insight into their feelings; it's hard to be totally invested in them from the get-go.
  • You might like this show if: You love shows about being single in a big city.
  • When it's on: Sundays at 10:30 p.m. on HBO
