It's been a long time since we've seen Tom Hanks in romantic comedy mode, but the versatile actor goes back to his funny-man roots for Larry Crowne. Hanks directed the film and stars as the titular Larry, a middle-aged guy who goes back to college when he gets fired from his blue collar job. There, he meets Mercedes (Julia Roberts), his beautiful if uninspired teacher who helps him find his way (and from the looks of it, a whole lot more).
The trailer didn't exactly blow my mind (there really needs to be a ban on usage of Train's "Hey Soul Sister"), and some of the supporting players (like Undercovers's Gugu Mbatha-Raw) feel a bit out of place. Still, as a forever fan of Tom Hanks, this man can do no wrong in my eyes, and it's certainly refreshing to see him going back to playing the everyman kind of character that put him on the map so many years ago. I'm just going to have to forget what he looks like in tighty-whiteys.
Watch the trailer and see how you feel about it when you read more.
