Kerry Washington was honored at yesterday's Variety Power of Women event for her work on behalf of the arts in schools. The Scandal star gave a powerful speech as she accepted her award during the luncheon about how important drama and dance were for her growing up as a latchkey kid in NYC; she recalled walking on city sidewalks strewn with "syringes and crack pipes" just to make it to her dance classes. We caught up with Kerry just before the ceremony to talk with her about growing up in a household that valued giving back and why Michelle Obama is one of the women who most inspires her.
