Drama among the cast of Grey's Anatomy isn't exactly a rarity, and it's even less shocking when Katherine Heigl is involved. The latest is that Heigl is leaving Grey's — but rest assured, it's not forever. She'll be taking a five episode hiatus to film Life as We Know It.
Five episodes may not sound like much, but it'll have a big impact on the upcoming season, especially since Ellen Pompeo will have to take maternity leave at some point. We'll also get to see Izzie's life take a new direction — supposedly Dr. Stevens will be fired from Seattle Grace to make room for new doctors. Sounds kinda harsh, but assuming Izzie is still battling cancer, it actually makes more sense that she stop working in the hospital. I'm just not sure what they'll do with her now — is she just going to be kept around as Mrs. Alex Karev, greeting him with baked goods at the end of his long days in surgery? After a few years of "will she or won't she?" I have a feeling that it can't be much longer before Heigl leaves for good.
What do you make of this news — will you miss Izzie for a few episodes? What would you like to see happen to her character now that she's not at the hospital anymore?

1I'll admit that I don't know that much about employment law, but I'm pretty sure there are statutes to protect people from being fired for having cancer.

I'm really curious to see how they're planning to save Grey's. I've been a fan since the beginning, but I really don't see the show lasting as long as they dream of.
3Huh, I wonder if they were really expecting Heigl to leave and then, once she didn't, have no idea what to do with Izzie. It seems totally bizarre to me that they'd have her be fired — you'd think that, given her near-death experiences, there could be other legit reasons for her to be gone for five episodes.

11I read that Alex and Izzie don't work out. I heard that Mer and Der are good as are all the other couples. Meredith will be leaving at some point for a maternity leave and that will be written in.
12My guess is that Izzie wants to help others and goes on some mission in Africa or something and Merideth will join her. They both are leaving but coming back and that is the only thing that makes sense to me for being gone that long of a period of time.
why am i not surprised by this news at all. she's just never content at any given time it seems. anyway, i hope that the show is able to make things work. i feel like it was on such a high a few years ago and now it's just kind of blah. oh well. good luck writers - and maybe the show will be better w/o KH? (can you tell that i'm not her biggest fan)

all the drama surrounding this show has just killed it for me. i don't know if i'll be watching this season..... i'm over it.
14The Grey's writers are nuts if they think they can keep people interested by switching out the cast for the most part. I think this whole firing storyline is ridiculous, and the only person I now want to have leave is Richard. I'm personally going to miss Izzie, but I at least hope that when she is gone for good they do it more justice than they did the George dying storyline. Out of the blue, who really cares because we haven't seen much of this person in forever it seems, but now they are gone so everyone be sad storylines are sooooooooo lame. If she wanted to leave, she should have left with George.
