This week, Katherine Heigl once again finds herself in the center of a bit of a controversy because of something she's said about one of her roles. Some folks over at the LA Times' awards blog noticed that Heigl (last year's Emmy champ) wasn't on the list of actresses being considered for this year's awards. In response, she said:
"I did not feel that I was given the material this season to warrant an Emmy nomination and in an effort to maintain the integrity of the academy organization, I withdrew my name from contention. In addition, I did not want to potentially take away an opportunity from an actress who was given such materials."
This has struck many as a major — and inappropriate — slam against the writers of Grey's Anatomy. But does Heigl have a point? In the past, she's had some of the juiciest material the show has ever offered up (hence winning an Emmy). But she spent the fourth season mostly in the background, doing silly things like performing CPR on a deer.
It's an ensemble show, and the writers have to consider the big picture rather than dealing out even storylines to each star all the time (also, the show's not called Izzie's Anatomy). But if Heigl really did get slighted with barely-there material that didn't allow her to do her best work, I guess it would feel strange to be nominated. Do agree with her about Izzie's diminished role?

I find myself getting antsy whenever Grey's has a Heigl scene - she's as bland as toast. The writing is pretty flat, has she talked to the producers or the writers? Could she do more with what she's given before publicly blasting other people's work?
1Didn't she make a comment that she wasn't sure she wanted to continue on the show? I also wonder how much her movie schedule has impacted the amount of on air time the show has given her.
2I don't like her very much. She seems very consumed with herself. I really didn't think she deserved her first emmy. However, like I read in an earlier article, the nominating committe is focusing on her acting ability and not the ability of the writers on the show. She should have graciously accepted the nomination and moved on.
3Sorry...committee
4Oh please, is she honestly serious. She is not all that.
5I try to like her, but honestly, I don't think she is a very good actress. She's much better at whining as evidenced by her recent remarks.
6i dont think she was trying to slam the writers! i think shes just saying that she doesnt feel she deserves to be nominated as she did not perform as well as other actresses this season. but she really does have a point. its not her fault that she wasnt given emmy winning material this season and i respect her for not wanting to take away from someone who deserves it more.
7She should be lucky that Shonda gave her the opportunity to improve her celeb ranking. She definitely wasn't starring in A-List roles before Grey's. w/o the show no one would know her? Give me a break Katherine. She starred in Knocked Up - one of the most mindless movies ever created.
8She's coming off like a bit of a snob IMO
9I wish more people would admit when they don't think their work deserves a nomination and I'm mostly referring to Desperate Housewives winning for the comedy category while Arrested Development aired.
10I'm with Elanakat. I applaud Katherine's choice.
11Ha, I try to like her to - keep looking for a reason WHY I seriously can't stand her. The whining, the eye rolling, the lack of depth on and off camera... I am SO glad this was relegated to the back this season.
She had a few big story arcs, but this is an ensemble and they can't all be in the forefront all the time... this season really pushed the show's focus and gave the characters dealing with trauma some time to try to cope and gave stable characters new issues - your fiance can't die every year. Bailey was just support and backbone and now she's getting her own story... same with Callie, who was just a love interest and intimidator and now gets her own arc... even McSteamy got more character time over Derek for a few shows... Christina was forefront and right now is in the same position as Izzy, recuperating and just less juicy... refocusing... the writers can't burn out the original characters by making it all about them all the time and keep the secondary players flat, it has been a natural progression to new and different storylines and I liked that. Kinda like ER, ppl faded smoothly in and out over the years - some years focused on one doc and cancer, another doc and drinking, another and Africa... kept it interesting...
12I think she has a valid point, but its obvious that her comment wasn't worded properly. I'm sure at the time she said it, she didn't think about how her words could have possibly been taken.
I still like her though!
13I respect her for rejecting the Emmy nod, because she's absolutely right... Izzy's storylines sucked this year! The only thing I would say is that she should not have publicly slammed the writers, but instead given a more vague reason about why she made that decision.
Can you imagine insulting your co-workers in front of the world, and then having to face them again the next day?? AWKWARD!!!!
14I can't really comment, I don't watch GA anymore. I watched the first season, and then had the stunning realization that I literally hated every single character. HATED. That's never happened to me before!
15Hey maybe if she was a better actress she could have taken what she had and made it Emmy worthy. *shrug* Not that I would know, I don't watch that show.
16I don't watch the show either, but from what I've read I agree with elanakat too. I don't think she was trying to "slam" the writers in any way. I also agree she could have worded it better. But I think it was honorable of her to pull out of the nomination and force them to look at someone else if she really believed she didn't deserve it this time around.
17She drives me insane. I mean, really? Sure, Grey's has been less than stellar, but it IS a soap opera. Plus, even if she didn't mean to slam the writers, I can't imagine it not coming off that way to them. She did the same thing - sticking her foot in her mouth - after Knocked Up made her a star. I just can't really handle her with her eye rolling and bossing people around (video of her and TR) and attitude when she won the Emmy last year. I'd say it's one of those things where she needs to start taking some time to think before she speaks.
18Her comment was unprofessional no matter what. Didnt she make ANOTHER off the wall comment about her movie "Knocked up" in the past...?
19Oh f*ck her! If she really wanted to save the integrity of the Emmy's she should've said "Grey's doesn't deserve an Emmy anyway - please take a look at Friday Night Lights for once...".
She must has a lovely relationship with her ego...
20She comes off as an ungrateful little whiner to me. Sorry, but I'm sure there are a thousand actresses who would line up to take that role from her and not complain for a second! Why is she still being talked about again? IMO, she's irrelevant.
21The remark does seem a little offensive, but it is also very true that she had nothing to work with last season. Most of the cast's storylines were actually pretty bad until the end, in my opinion. I think its obvious that she wants to get off the show, so she's probably trying to get kicked off or asked to leave.
22i think that the season was a little lack luster but i think that it's more about her ego than anything else. who wants to win one year and not win the next right? that's why she's being the way that she is.
23To me, the statement implies that her Emmy nomination was set in stone, when in reality, she's just being considered. It seems a little presumptuous to me. If she didn't feel she deserved recognition, she should have just not sent any of her material in for consideration (if she did in fact send it in; otherwise, this is a non-issue).
Instead of falling into the reporter's trap when he/she asked this question (b/c the story does say 'when asked'), she should have been a little more savvy about it. In addition, her category is for ACTING, not writing. Not every actor performs Emmy/Oscar/(insert award here)-worthy material, but they do their best work despite that, b/c it's their job.
24she's so ungrateful , good things tend to be over, get it over!
nothing is eternal, Grey's great story is not eternal.
and she can't say those things aloud, because, they are the writers, they give her the material to her success so, please, writers: kill her off!, please!, and bring Burke back, ok , XO XO
25I stopped watching Grey's after Burke and Addison left. It got lame. And I couldn't stand George, Izzie, or Meredith. So that left very few characters to like.
26And to be honest, I think Natalie Dormer of "The Tudors" deserves the award above any other female on television.
27Wow - with one sentence she insults two important groups of people - questioning the creativity of the show writers, and the integrity of the academy who are nominating/voting.
28As someone once said "Big Mistake." "Huge."
29As if I need one more reason to not like her ... pfffft. whatever, Katherine.
30I don't think she was talking abou the writers, just that this season se didn't or couldn't work as much 'cause of the movies she was making and therefore she didn't think it was right to be nominated ofr doing less than others, but I don't know, if she says things like that she should be careful.
31Don't watch or don't care! i liked her in Knocked Up, didn't care for 27 dresses. She already got an ego!
32Maybe they wrote her in the background because she was getting so annoying being so outspoken(at times tactlessly so) in real life?
33I'm tired of Heigl and her opinions.
34tip to writers: maybe if a helicopter land on her and, sad sad ending, wait a minute... never mind, scene already seen...
I mean, she wants to me written off, doesn't she?
and to believe that they say Isaiah Washington was a the controversial one
35I just think it was presumptuous, as someone else said. I honestly don't think she would have been nominated anyways, whether it be her acting or the writing. Therefore, I think it's a little ridiculous to take your own name out of consideration. When asked why she took it out, all she had to say was, "No comment." I'm pretty sure the writers would have appreciated it!
36I'm undecided on this issue... I really hope she comes out and says more like in defense of her decision b/c i can't tell if she is trying to slam the writers or she is just slamming her own performance. I can't wait to see how this plays out...
37I agree with her although I have to say I am not a fan of Grey's (in general.)
If she had kept her name on the ballot and won an emmy, people would be slamming her by saying she won it because of celebrity hype. So she removes her name from the ballot and explains why (the truth) and people find fault with her. Now, I am not a huge fan of Heigl however no matter what she does, the public will always find faults with her.
38i think she totally has a point!
39Her character annoys the hell out of me, and the writing isn't helping. Her statement is a bit catty but she has a point.
40She comes across as a whiny brat. It's clear that she wants off this show, but I think the writers/Shonda are going to give her even worse storylines/less airtime next season, just to piss her off
41It sounds kinda passive-aggressive to me. But eh...I'd just like to see John C. McGinley win an Emmy for "Scrubs". Is that too much to ask?
42katherine HAGl just needs to keep her mouth shut period. she's a nasty hag that bit the mouth that fed her w/ knocked up, and now grey's....seriously who really does she think she is?
43lol !!! i meant to write bit the hand that fed her! anyway she still sucks it
44they shouldn't have teamed her character up with George in the first place. it went downhill from there
45I mean, I understand what she's saying....buuuutttt, this is story telling. The writer's of the show aren't thinking "oh, give this actor good material to do well to lead to this and that", they're just telling a story. The story of these people is always going to be different, to change, and move in ebbs and flows bcuz of who each character is. So I don't think the writer's are doing this to her deliberately. This is just Izzie's story and she's going through something different this season. As are the other characters. Think of them as real people and maybe it'll make more sense. *shrugs*
46i think she's being a jerk. she should be fired. according to perezhilton.com:
An insider tells Entertainment Weekly, “The show bent over backwards to accommodate her film schedule, and then she criticizes the show for lack of material? It's an ungrateful slap in the face to the very writers responsible for her Emmy win in the first place.”
47(http://perezhilton.com/2008-06-13-they-all-hate-her-now)
While I like the fact that she shied away from the Emmy race, I hope she did not air her frustrations with the writers in public. She could've done her own spin, but I don't like that she went all oh-no-you-di-int on the writers. If she had issues with the writers, she could've just worked it out in the background.
(But, I do agree with her. Izzie was so blah this last season.)
48I agree Francoisehardly. Arrested Development was overlooked. However, I think Heigl could have stated this in a manner that didn't make her sound self righteous or stuck up. Her statement just sounds so smug. Although I applaud her for removing herself from the category if she did not think the work was worthy, she seems to blame everything on the writers. Ugh...
49I agree with her and I think it was good of her to withdraw her nomination.
