John Cusack Movie Roles

John Cusack's new movie, Hot Tub Time Machine, is out this weekend, so what better time to look back at how he's changed over time? He may have lost to Freddie Prinze Jr. in the first round of our Teen Heartthrob Bracket (you can vote in the latest round now!), but I'd say he's improved with age anyway. So maybe this contest is better for John. After all, it can't get much better than competing against yourself — or can it?

Hot Tub Time Machine: Offensively Funny

It's OK to be skeptical of the whole hot-tub-as-time-machine thing that is the plot of, ahem, Hot Tub Time Machine.

It's OK to be skeptical of the whole hot-tub-as-time-machine thing that is the plot of, ahem, Hot Tub Time Machine. The movie is aware of its own ridiculousness and quickly shepherds you past that little detail so you can let yourself go and thoroughly enjoy it. Being able to appreciate the absurdity of a sci-fi jacuzzi is the first thing you'll need to love this movie; the other thing? A highly dirty sense of humor.

John Cusack, Craig Robinson, and Rob Corddry star as three buddies who try to relive their glory days at the ski lodge they once ruled in the '80s. Clark Duke plays the nephew of Cusack's character, his youth serving to remind the three men of their age and dissatisfaction with their grown-up lives. The perfect storm of debauchery, alcohol, and a shorted hot tub control panel leads them to time travel to their former selves in 1986. It's unbelievably silly, but to see why I lost myself in the madness, just read more

Where the Wild Things Are

More for adult fans of the book than today's young audience, Spike Jonze's adaptation of Where the Wild Things Are is an homage to childhood that shows the darker, sometimes scary side of being a kid. Even the puppets convey emotion in a way that tugs on the heart strings. It's no secret that Where the Wild Things Are was one of my favorite films last year, so I may have to buy this one for my library.

Special features include four webisodes, but the Blu-ray also includes the short "Higglety Pigglety Pop!" featuring the voices of Meryl Streep and Forest Whitaker.

2012

Part over-the-top disaster movie, part sweet family story, and 100 percent entertaining, 2012 stars John Cusack as a divorced father. He's stuck in the middle of an apocalyptic calamity (biblical-sized floods, giant earthquake cracks, etc), trying to rescue his children and ex-wife (Amanda Peet) from the chaos. Yes, it's cheesy and falls victim to the typical blockbuster cliches, but as weekend popcorn flicks go, it's a sure bet. Bonus: in a perfect casting move, Woody Harrelson plays a wacky conspiracy theorist.

Special features include deleted scenes and an alternate ending, which has me curious — how different can an ending be when you're talking about the end of the world?

2012: Apocalyptic Good Times

In terms of end-of-the-world movies, 2012 packs it all — a love story, teary family moments, action-packed adventure, over-the-top-CGI, and a ton of recycled film cliches — in a two and a half hour package.

In terms of end-of-the-world movies, 2012 packs it all — a love story, teary family moments, action-packed adventure, over-the-top-CGI, and a ton of recycled film cliches — in a two and a half hour package. That's lengthy by today's standards, but I wasn't bored for a minute. This is pure escapist entertainment.

The film opens in 2009 as a scientist in India and his American associate Adrian Helmsley (Chiwetel Ejiofor) discover that the Earth's core is overheating. His forecast: Tectonic plates will shift, thereby causing a worldwide catastrophe that will wipe out the human race.

I will always have a soft spot for John Cusack thanks to his memorable '80s roles as the sharp but self-deprecating underdog. (You know you love Lloyd Dobler!) As years pass he continues to pop up in movies —whether he's playing the sweet hero in a rom-com (Serendipity), or a record-store owner in the midst of a breakup (High Fidelity). This Friday he'll be a dad facing the end of the world in 2012. Sure, you're probably familiar with his films, but just how sharp are you? Test your I.Q. by taking my quiz!
