John Adams writer/producer Kirk Ellis just came by the Emmy press room to talk about what happened when his acceptance speech got cut off in favor of a reality show award promo.
"As soon as I got up there and opened my mouth, they were already flashing the 'wrap it up'," he said. "I find it really interesting that we can have 30 minutes of the show devoted to reality show hosts, when the people who actually create the work don't get enough time to talk." (He got a lot of applause in the press room for that line.)
As for what he was going to say? Ellis wanted to talk about how in the time of John Adams, the word was primary. "We have to listen to a lot of bloviating from pundits in this silly election season about whether words matter and rhetoric matters," he said. "Of course words matter. They always matter. We have to listen to what they have to say."

I thought his being cut off was not on purpose, like when that thing happened in the Oscars (I can't remember what category, but it was with that lady for the Once soundtrack, w/c by the way is fantastic); I thought they were going to give him a chance to finish when the show came back. Turns out they did cut him off purposely. A ridiculous decision, and insulting, too. He won, for Pete's sake, let the guy have his speech.
1They are so insulting. Good for him for speaking his mind and telling the truth.
2i think that there's a conspiracy sometimes for how much time they allow folks to talk and all that - but oh well - what can you do right? he should be proud that he got his award, and yes it's a shame that he was cut off - but you can't go back and change history right?
3John Adams is such a wonderful production. That he wasn't allowed to speak is more than disappointing. Thanks for reporting what he would have said, Buzz. Words, indeed, do matter.
4He deserved to say whatever he wanted for as long as he wanted. He created a show that got people interested in American history and a president that is usually looked over in history books in favor of Washington and Jefferson.
5It always bothers me when they cut off speeches but make the audience weather through ridiculous stunts and performances. I could have been spared the opening sequence with the "hosts". Well actually I was, I changed the channel until they got to the acting awards. It boggles my mind that these awards shows haven't seem to have gotten why their ratings are in the tank--they are predictable and they include the most ridiculous drivel. Stop with all the stupid stunts and let the actors and winners get their time to accept the awards.
