Quentin Tarantino's fans did not disappoint him this weekend, helping Inglourious Basterds rake in over $37 million at the box office this past weekend. Here's your fun revenue statistic of the day: it's the highest-grossing opening ever for a movie released in the second half of August. District 9 was knocked to the number two slot with $18.9 million while G.I. Joe took third, bringing in $12.5 million. The Time Traveler's Wife and Julie and Julia rounded out the top five.

Inglourious Basterds was the only new release to score major success this weekend; Shorts came in sixth place with $6.6 million while Alexis Bledel's Post Grad just barely cracked the top ten with $2.8 million.

Bravo, QT!!! I have a feeling it'll remain strong as fans return for repeat viewings -- I know I'll be seeing it again!
1i saw inglorious this weekend and aside from a bit of gore (which at least i was expecting) it was good
i'm glad that the movie did well - it was really funny for the content, and i hope that they decide to do the prequel
2I saw it mid day on Sun and the theater was packed! I was surprised at how funny it was and entertaining and how guilty I felt having that much fun with the subject manner and violence. But I rate it in QT's top three movies.
3Congratulations QT and BP
4i thought it was awesome!
5The production values for this movie are high. Great actors and cinematography and style. I had to close my eyes during some of the violent scenes, but they weren't overdrawn and I thought the dialog was great.
6Tarantino does usually write great dialogue. That's always been one of his hallmarks. Good to see him reaching a new high in his career, and Brad Pitt can still carry a #1 opening. Guess it was worth all those months with that mustache.
