"House" Rundown: Episode 2, "The Right Stuff"

As much as I loved watching House work alone on last week's "House," it was even better to see him surrounded by new potential team members to torture. I'm not sure if any of these new candidates have (ahem) the right stuff to be House's new lackeys, but it's sure going to be fun to watch them try. To talk about the episode, just read more

Our patient of the week: an Air Force captain who's supposed to start the astronaut training program when she starts having symptoms of synesthesia. She shows up with $50,000 in cash for House to fix her off the books so she can still go into space. This leads to a lot of sneaking around behind Cuddy's back, clever diagnostic procedures, and even elective breast augmentation surgery that would let the surgeons check her lungs without NASA finding out.

Unlike last week, House has a whole room full of eager-beaver fellowship candidates — with numbers instead of names — to do the job for him. When Cuddy gives him guff about the number of people he's interviewing, he fires a whole row; when it's time to split them into teams, he divides them by who likes the designated hitter rule. It's House at his unsentimental best, and if the (temporary?) departure of Foreman, Cameron and Chase leads to more moments like those, I'm all for it.

We got a few insights into the potential new team members, and while I — like House — don't want to get too invested yet, it does seem like a few of them will be around for a while. "Thirteen" (Olivia Wilde) is clearly House's new crush. Kal Penn's character (can we just call him Kumar?) was fired early on but got a second shot when he defiantly switched his "6" to a "9" and re-entered the competition. My favorite was the older man who isn't a doctor at all, and I'm glad he's sticking around as House's assistant; as House said at the end, it's his dream job, just not his dream title.

I loved the appearances/apparitions of Chase and Cameron, especially Wilson trying to convince House he was crazy for seeing them. But those two were there after all: Chase working in surgery, Cameron (newly blonde) working as an attending in the ER. As for House's visions of Foreman, well, those are yet to be explained.

A few other thoughts:

  • My favorite one-liner, upon House's learning that his patient was training to be an astronaut: "I discovered salt and created FM radio."
  • The job candidate I'm most on the fence about is the blonde snitch who was assigned to wash House's car, led an uprising to get everyone to quit, then came back with House's keys and drove to a car wash. How will House deal with someone who picks on the faults of others rather than standing out on her own?
  • I can't believe they set a patient on fire. Even I know not to use anything that could set off a spark in an environment with concentrated oxygen. OK, I learned that from "Grey's Anatomy" last year, but still.
  • How many times did a character say something to House about how he's the doctor who breaks all the rules?
  • Wilson, upon learning that House was seeing Cameron with blonde hair in his visions: "Why are you merging Cameron and Chase? You should find out before the next time you see her, when she'll be black."
  • I'm still not sure I understand the ending. House told the patient he called the NASA doctors, but then he told Cameron it wasn't true and he just needed to shut off "some leaky faucets." Whose dream was House trying to crush?

Your thoughts? Loving any of the new doctors so far? Think the vision of Foreman was real?

I couldn't stand snitch blonde doctor wannabe, either. She really annoys me. Cameron was awesome at the end, though. I really hope that even if her and Chase are no longer House's lackeys that they stay in the show. The way they play off of House just makes me warm and fuzzy inside.

The ending was because House didn't want the other doctors in the room to let NASA know, so he made it look as if he truly did call NASA. But this way, the patient, Greta, is allowed to continue on with NASA as if nothing ever happened and the other doctors are none the wiser. I wasn't that big a fan of Cameron at the end, but I liked Chase's part. I haven't quite decided about the blonde snitch - I like that she led the rebellion and then washed the car, but the constant tattling was really irritating. I liked #13, so I'm hopeful she'll be sticking around. And the older man - glad that House has decided to retain him. And the byplay between House and Wilson - fabulous as usual. I love how Wilson kept House from realizing what was going on right in front of his face and kept him off balance.
ohhhhhh i loved it tryin to guess who'd make it i knew 13 as soon as i saw her and ..kurmar my bf was like he should pick the old guy im shocked he didnt get the plastic surgeon what with the whole breast implant thing seemed bold enough whatever

Ah, thanks, ALSW! That makes total sense.

No problem. If it makes you feel better, that was my husband's explanation! I didn't get it last night either.

great episode! wasn't the plastic surgeon Debra Messing's ex-husband in The Starter Wife? And didn't he already interview "13" before?

I'm with you Buzz, I LOVED it. It was great seeing House with new people, but I continue to love the House/Wilson banter. I understood the ending the same, that House let on he notified NASA when he didn't. I got a little tired of the "doctor who breaks rules" thing. I thought Cuddy lept a tighter lid on things. One thing I'm not convinced about is that if Cameron decided to work in ER and Chase in Surgery, why that hospital? Especially after three years with Gregory House, they should be able to get a job anywhere? It's just too convenient. I would love the older man to be his "assistant" (ha ha to dream job, but not dream title). I also liked # 13, sort of like a prettier, not so sappy Cameron replacement. Speaking of which, I didn't like the ending, just had to bring Cameron in for a mushy ending, lol. Oh! And Kumar did become a doctor! His Dad will be proud.

Great recap, Buzz. I'm really enjoying House this season; the shakeup is bringing out the "best" in House! Loved Kal Penn's character, but I'm not sure yet about "Number 13." Like Jinx, I didn't really like the final scenes with Cameron, but thought Chase's scene was good. Love the House-Wilson interplay. Hugh Laurie is simply the best!

I wish House would get a little bit crankier for old time sake. He's softened a bit and I love it when he's more irritable!!!!

Jinx, I know what you mean! Why WOULDN'T they go work at the Mayo Clinic?

LOL, yeah, But I guess Chase did look pretty cute.

Anyone know where you can watch the episode .. if you live in Italy? Haha.. my friend lives there and can't watch it on Fox's website because he lives out of the country!

At first I thought that House was seeing his former team when he would get a glimpse of them in one of his new minions. Like when the guy won't lie to get the patient out of the alter room (Cameron), and then 13 was the one with the House-pleasing complex (Chase), and the Mormon stuck to his beliefs and tried to keep the others in check (Foreman). I actually thought it was a hint as to the final three, until he got rid of 10(my "Cameron") and they revealed Cameron and Chase were really there. Commenters, do you think that it actually was a clue??? Also, Olivia Wilde!!!! Loved her on the Black Donnelly's, but she'll always be Marissa's lesbian lover for me. I'm stoked she's around, an amazing actress and not bad to look at either! Sorry to get so long winded, I loved it that much.

I do not like that blonde snitch doctor either. I loved the episode and when I saw the preview for next weeks episode I was like OMG House tried to kill himself....even though we all know he isn't gonna die lol.

Bizzyatwork, interesting insight, I'm glad you're long winded! lol Glad you love the show!

Does anyone else wonder if Chase and Cameron are actually engaged or if Wilson was lying about that, too?
- 5 years ago Report Comment
Never thought about the fact that they might not be engaged. Interesting idea, ellepea. And as for next week, I think House fakes something to see what his little trainees do and how they react. Can't wait!

Haha I agree with Bizzyatwork, she'll always be Marissa's lesbian lover to me too. When I first saw her I thought, "She's definitely in." I'm also on the bandwagon that isn't rooting for the blonde car wash girl. It was a good episode, but I missed the last 5-10 minutes. Can anyone fill me in? Did they find out what happened to "Osama Bin Laden"?
I love how they referred to the patient as Osama Bin Ladin
p.s I agree...I don't like the blond snitch...

I liked the episode - it brought some good energy and helped blow away the angsty-ness of the end of last season. Here's hoping a crowd hangs around House for a while!

I thought house called nasa but didn't tell him the patient's real name?To find out if the disease she had would disqualify her?Didn't he say the doctors at nasa didn't even know where the hyphen in the name of the disease went?so that means that shes ok to start the space program? or am i just massively confused here

The blonde snitch kept things interesting, but I don't want her to get the job. It was funny when Cuddy is like What Is Her Name?! And the guy finally says Osama Bin Laden! :rotfl:

I couldn't stand the blonde chick, and I was disappointed that they got rid of the "10" guy who seemed like he fit in pretty well. Also, was the blonde snitch the girl from last week? The one that said, "I just want to help people" or whatever. I couldn't remember what she looked like but I didn't see her in this episode.
This was one of my favorite episodes yet. I thought it was clever when 6 came back in as 9, and when Cuddy, asked who the patient was, the guy said Osama Bin Laden so deadpan. It was great.
