6 Theories About House of Cards Season 3

Sure, the third season of House of Cards may not be coming for a long time, but that doesn't mean we can't kick off the speculation about what will happen. It's been exactly one month since the second season was released on Netflix, and we've had enough time to process all of the backstabbing, shockers, and strategic alliances. Now, we're gathering up our biggest predictions on what is going to happen in the upcoming season. If you haven't finished the second season yet, turn back now (and finish it up already!) as these theories are chock-full of plot points from seasons past.

Frank Is Going to Crash, Hard

The first two seasons of the show were all about Frank (Kevin Spacey) clawing his way to the president's seat, and now there's only one direction he can go — down. Frank has made a lot of enemies over the years, and we imagine that they are going to come out of the woodwork now that Frank is in the big chair.

Zoe's Death Will Come Back to Haunt Frank

We've already discussed how Zoe's (Kate Mara) death was foreshadowed in the British version of House of Cards as Zoe's British character (called Mattie) was killed by the British Francis. However, in the British series, Mattie was secretly recording her conversation with Francis and, after her death, an unseen person picks up her recorder. We never see what happens to the recorder as the series ended shortly after Mattie's death, but there is an implication that someone finds out about Francis's dirty work.

Lucas (Sebastian Arcelus) attempted to find out the truth about Zoe's death, which led to his undoing, but that doesn't mean that Frank's involvement won't eventually bubble up again. Now that Frank is president, there will be an increased amount of pressure put on him and his various scandals. Maybe Gavin will attempt to help out Lucas and find Zoe's phone record, or maybe Zoe left a clue about her relationship with Frank somewhere. Zoe knew that Frank was headed to the top, and it's a little hard to believe that she didn't have a backup of their texts somewhere.

We're Still Not Done With Rachel

If Zoe's death doesn't come back to haunt Frank, surely Rachel (Rachel Brosnahan) will. She is still a huge liability for Frank, and now that she is on the run after murdering Doug, she might even be on his hit list. We know Frank has the capacity to kill, and it seemed like Doug was the only one who wanted to keep her around. Now that he's gone — and she is at fault — there is no excuse for Frank not to get rid of her; his only trouble will be tracking her down.

Then again, one of the great things about this show is that it can abruptly cut off story lines once they get a little tiresome (like Claire's lawsuit) and, let's face it, the Rachel story line has gotten a little old hat at this point. We could see Rachel being dealt with in the first episode of the third season, and then never hearing from her or speaking about it again.

Meechum Will Become the New Doug

Meechum (Nathan Darrow) has an intense and strange loyalty to Frank and Claire, and now that they all share a secret, we could see the Underwoods leveraging that to get Meechum to become their hit man. We just hope that they go light on the threesome scenes this year.

Frank Will Team Back Up With Remy

This theory comes from Reddit, where user BradsCanadianBacon theorized that Frank will team up with his former employee now that Remy (Mahershala Ali) is out of work. The Frank-Remy dynamic has been a constant throughout the series, and Remy was almost presented as a kind of troublesome son figure for Frank. There's no way that dynamic can disappear in the third season.

However, there is also a possibility that Remy will hook back up with Jackie (Molly Sharp) — at least in the professional kind of way. At the end of the second season, there were hints that she might be turning on Frank, and hiring Remy would be a big F U to Frank, especially if Frank makes a point to not hire Remy or help him out.

Claire's Role Will Expand

One of the most interesting things about the third season will be seeing Claire (Robin Wright) deal with being the first lady. Claire could use her position to try to push through different pieces of legislation that she wants, and it would be interesting to see how she deals with people who get in her way. There's also the fact that the first lady position isn't exactly a position of power, and we could see that driving the power-hungry, supremely ambitious Claire mad. Source: Netflix
