9 Scary Movie Recommendations From the American Horror Story Cast

Modern horror may be having sort of a moment right now, but Kathy Bates is all about the classics. When we asked she went right to "the standards, like Rosemary’s Baby."

More than one cast member remembers the horrors of The Exorcist, which is perhaps the most popular possession story of all time. "I'll say The Exorcist," Finn Wittrock said, while Sarah Paulson admitted, "The Exorcist. And by favorite, I mean I can’t watch it."

When we posed the question to Evan Peters, a recent horror fan, he knew the answer right away. "I really like The Thing. The practical gags in there are amazing. They're amazing. They don't do it like that anymore."

"My favorite horror movie is an odd one, but i think it's the greatest horror movie of all time, and it's Jaws. A lot of people don't consider it a horror movie, but I think it's the best monster movie ever made," cocreator Brad Falchuk said.

"I saw one recently called The Babadook. . . . It's really scary, but it's also really profound. It has a lot to say through horror, which I always think is probably the hardest thing to do in a horror movie," said Matt Bomer.

Considering we're about to check into American Horror Story's hotel, we just knew someone had to bring up the classic hotel horror film. Wes Bentley said, "The Shining. It's also my favorite film, period."

"It's so hard to say, because I grew up in the '80s, when there were all those great slashers and gore horror movies. I would say the first Nightmare on Elm Street," Matt Bomer said.

Nightmare on Elm Street wasn't the only horror movie Matt Bomer loved growing up. He offered another pick: "Halloween was definitely a really significant one for me."

Kathy Bates, as you know, won an Oscar for her turn as Annie Wilkes in the blood-curdling adaptation of Stephen King's Misery. She had a couple picks of her own, including this one. "Psycho. I'm a big horror fan. Horror's been good to me.”
