We all saw this one coming, but Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part I tore up the box office in its debut weekend, taking in a staggering $125.1 million. Those numbers earned the film the sixth-highest opening weekend of all time, and was the best debut for the franchise to date. Last week's champ, Megamind, settled for a distant second place with $16.1 million.

Unstoppable took third with $13.1 million, followed by Due Date with $9.1 million. Rounding out the top five was newbie The Next Three Days, which clocked in at $6.7 million. With a holiday weekend on the horizon, I'm expecting Potter to add to its impressive tally — what will you be seeing over the Thanksgiving break?

I read the book. The first half also included a big change in Harry's relationship with his cousin - glimpses of that relationship started most if not all the Potter movies; the classmates who have become more important in each movie are left out of this movie - even though in the first half of the book we learn they're rebelling and being harshly punished; Draco Malfoy's situation is much different from what he expected it would be with Voldemort back; Harry makes personal connections to his past in the first half of Book 7; Dumbledore's history is referred to but there's no effort to examine it and how Harry feels about Dumbledore now is significant in the second half of the book. To me, they put all the pauses in Deathly Hallows in this movie.

The first half of Book seven was mainly about how the trio's relationship to each other and how they regard themselves change or are affected by their transient journey. There is slow story development because that is how it was written in the book. It picks up - really fast - in the second movie. The second movie will be a roller-coaster ride and a war epic.

I think it's easier to like this one if you haven't read the books. It was pleasant, but I couldn't believe how much wasn't included - there was an awful of lot scenery, very little story advancement. I don't understand why they bothered to split the book into two movies.

surprisingly it was pretty good. i've never read any of the HP books and i've seen the last 2 movies and was really disappointed by the last one so i didn't care much about DH. it turned out to be really good though and i'm looking forward to the last one to come out next year.
