Happy Endings

Eliza Coupe is part of one of TV's funniest ensembles on Happy Endings, and when I recently chatted with the actress, I found that she's just as hilarious as her character, Jane. Coupe dished about the hijinks we can expect from the rest of the season, but she also she talked about the Happy Endings footage we may never see: the blooper reel. Coupe told me why it might not be suitable for the public, and she also confessed which of her crushes will make a guest appearance on the show.

BuzzSugar: Which of your costars make you crack up during scenes?
Eliza Coupe: Almost all of them. Honestly, all of them, they all do. If we have a scene with all of us, it's ridiculous. But of course Damon [Wayans Jr.] and I . . . they showed a gag reel at our wrap party a week and a half ago and it was edited down to two hours and nine minutes, and honestly the whole thing was Damon and I, because we completely break all the time with each other. And we do it purposely. We're horrible. The crew after a while is like, "OK, OK, alright, everybody."

Buzz: How does one get their hands on this gag reel?
EC: I know, it's so good! It's totally R-rated though. Damon and I use every single bad word that's been invented, or we invent it ourselves.

Buzz: I hope it's on the DVD.
EC: I know! I hope so too. I wish they would just release it. I think it would be such a cool thing to have it released, but I feel like there would be some serious bans on it though. It would be taken off the Internet, it's so dirty. It is so dirty.

Buzz: How dirty?
EC: Well in Happy Endings, we shoot pretty much everything X-rated, R-rated, NC-17, whatever you want to call it, and then they trim it down to make it suitable for network television.

Eliza Coupe and Damon Wayans Jr. play hilarious married couple Jane and Brad on Happy Endings, and the actors are just as funny in real life as they are on the show. When they recently hopped on the phone to chat with a group of reporters, they cracked everyone up with their answers to questions about things like how Jane and Brad met, how they keep straight faces among such funny costars, and where they'd like to see their characters go.

The cast is full of some pretty funny people. How do you guys manage to keep straight faces?
Damon Wayans Jr.: I have no tricks. I laugh whenever it's funny, so I waste time. And we actually all try and make each other break, and we like to actually stay in there longer just to make each other laugh. And I don't really think anybody's mastered a technique on not laughing, it's just fun. I like that.
Eliza Coupe: I keep a knife in my pocket at all times and just stab myself when I'm going to laugh. And it gets a little bloody, it's a little weird, but I am stabbing my leg during most of the show. So . . .

ABC comedy Happy Endings comes back for its second season tonight, and it's one of the returning shows I've been looking forward to most. It was introduced as a midseason comedy back in April about a group of six friends in a city (Chicago). The quirky humor hooked me, and I'm hoping more people will give this hilarious show a shot in its second season. If you're thinking about getting into it, here are a few important details to get you up to speed, along with a sneak peek at the new season.

1. Alex and Dave are exes, and they're cool with each other. Well, sort of; they broke up in the series premiere, in a rather messy fashion: Alex (Elisha Cuthbert) left Dave (Zachary Knighton) at the altar. Now, months later, they've pretty much made their peace with each other and are getting their groove back as single people — but there's still a little spark there.
2. Max is gay, but he's no stereotype. Straight actor Adam Pally plays Max without relying on gay stereotypes that used to be the norm on TV and in movies. He basically plays Max as a commitment-phobic, regular single guy — just one who dates other dudes.
3. Penny is the hopeless single girl, and it's mostly her fault. It's not that Penny, played by Casey Wilson, is single because she's unlucky in love or only meets freak shows; Penny's kind of a freak show herself, and it's great. Whether she's doodling her date's name obsessively or completely changing her persona to fit in with the guy she's interested in, Penny goes way over the top — but she never gives up hope that this could be the week she meets her dream man.
4. Jane and Brad are married and determined to stay that way. Alex's sister Jane (Eliza Coupe) is married to Brad (Damon Wayans Jr.), and they're the only committed couple on the show. Even though all their friends are playing the field, their bond is rock solid, because as they say, Jane and Brad have way too much sex to break up.
